There was once so many record stores in NYC, this one was in the Times Square subway station! It was called Record Mart and I'm not sure if Jimbo was a fan as he was more of a Penn Station person and of course had plenty of other record stores to browse in. But I do remember this store when I would pass through Times Square in the late 70's and 80's.

Man, they used to have stuff like that in Germany too. When I lived in Frankfurt, my favorite shop was at a place downtown in the shopping district (the Hauptwache), but there was this little place in the U-bahn station near the main train station that used to carry British imports. I remember buying Metallica's "Creeping Death" 12" and the first version of Blue Öyster Cult's Club Ninja there.

I haven't been down there in many years, but the Times Square station used to have a lot of stores. It was like a shopping mall.

Last week I was in Milwaukee on a project. In the blur, I was like, I need to check out a record store. I was able to get to one with 20 minutes to spare before they closed. Bullseye Records. It was small but had a very good collection of vinyl (large Jazz, significant Reggae, along with the usual suspects). I found the used CDs to be intriguing and not just the left over carcasses my locals had turned into (a bad sign for the medium when there's not too many being trading in anymore lol). Turns out I was glad I only had 20 minutes (though the guy kept it open a bit more when he saw a few stacked on the counter before I dove back in), else it would have been expensive. Certainly nothing like a Jimbo lunch, but I liked what I was able to grab, and look forward to going back to Milwaukee for more project work and you check out without a rush (I understand there are a few other good stores in the area which I want to visit as well). As has been noted in other threads (which I cannot find), five-plus years after the last area F.Y.E. store liquidated, there is still a thriving market for independent music stores--particularly those selling new and used vinyl--in the Tampa/St. Pete area. The article below discusses one of at least seven area stores which I know of:

Yeah, Tampa, St.Pete and Clearwater have many record & cd stores. Luckily we always had and extremely grateful that it continues.
Need to see Manny at 'Daddy Kool's' in St. Pete to talk about his pending move. Insane rent increase, St. Pete Central Avenue continues to really prosper but if it takes out small business for the Starbuck's of the freak'in world ala NYC then they will kill what has made the downtown(s) so successful.

If you're not nice
I've lived here for nearly 20 years and still have no idea how many walk-in music stores there are, where they're located or what they're called. I could take you guys on an incredible tour of Tampa Bay's eateries, though.

Record Mart still exists. It's now more a multi-purpose store (headphones and other electronics) and the music selection is more Latin/salsa.
