I've shopped there a couple of times over the years, and frankly the place was more a fire hazard than a retail store. It's no exaggeration to say that larger people wouldn't get much further than the entrance.

The ORIGINAL Easy Street in downtown Bellevue, WA (not Kim's later imitations) was probably my fav b&m as a teen.

That place was basically a dump. I went there a few times years ago and bought a couple of CDs, but I ignored it after that. Even when other stores started to close I didn't go there. It was crammed full of CDs that nobody would want. Pretty much in no order.

Seth, if you're responding to me, the store I'm talking about was pre-cd LP only. There have been 3 completely different Easy Streets. This one was in the 70's.

Sorry for the confusion - I was talking about the store in the NY Times article and photo a few posts above.

Loved Third Street Jazz in Philly. Long gone. Used to save save my shekels and hit that place twice a year. Nothing but jazz vinyl. They never made a successful transition to CDs and went out of business. I'd hit that then head to Tower Records on South Street. Back then, Tower had a separate store across the street with nothing but classical music - and that store was HUGE!

Wow, we had a Tower Books down the street from the Flagship Tower Records, but never a classical only! One of our smaller Towers did devote the entire 2nd floor to Classical.

There was a Tower Outlet Store a block down from the main Tower on 4th St. in NYC. I'd often get good buys there. And right across the street from that was Tower Video where I probably spent as much money if not more on videotapes and DVDs as I did on music in the main store.. That store's entire second floor was books.

Interesting article online today called Humans Of The CD Store, who still shops at stores? Noisey went to an Australian CD store to find out.

Do you buy many CDs?
Yeah, I’ve got about 300 CDs at home.

That’s so many!

Jerry's Records NOT closing!

Quote:
Click for full size

With the news of the Other Music Record Shop in the East Village of New York City closing in June, I'm reminded of a conversation I had in the hallway of Jerry's Records in Squirrel Hill on Saturday.

"Scotty!," Jerry Weber yelled to me from his crowded perch at the register. "Tell the people, put it on your web site: We're not closing!"

"Jerry," I said. "We don't usually run news of stores NOT closing. What would I do: run a headline: 'Jerry's NOT closing'?"

"Yeah!," he said. "Since that story ran, I've had no less than a hundred calls asking if we're closing."

That story was the April 26 news that Jerry's was selling its collection of nearly 700,000 singles to a German buyer. He made it clear in the story that the singles were not a hot commodity here among people who don't have jukeboxes (which is a lot) and that he wanted to make more room for vinyl in the store, but that was not the message people took away from it.

A weeks before that, on Record Store Day, Jerry's gave away nearly 50,000 records (a drop in the bucket) to clear stock from the Bargain Basement, which he does plan to close by the end of the year.

That aside, the simple message from Jerry Weber is: Stay calm, vinyl junkies, the world is not ending.

I haven't shopped at Other Music since Tower went under. I'll have to check it out and see if I can pick up some bargains.

I am really bummed about Other Music. I live nearby, and I was there weekly for at least the last 10 years.

Jimbo, if they have good deals leave some for us!

Wait - I heard about Other Music, but where did you hear Rebel Rebel is closing??

I often stop in there on Saturdays when I go to pick up my shirts at the laundry.

I have to say that the owner of Rebel Rebel is a great guy, as are most of the employees of Other Music. Can't say that about all record store people....

A buddy of mine has been friends with the owner for decades.

To be honest, I thought Sounds shut down already. Haven't shopped there in a couple years. Bought many a promo LP there back in the 80s, and more than a few CDs in the decades since.

Vin Diesel worked behind the counter at Sounds before he became a movie star.

He probably doesn't remember most people he's met over the years, but he'd take one look at you and go "Oh yeah! I definitely remember you!"
