To be honest, I thought Sounds shut down already. Haven't shopped there in a couple years. Bought many a promo LP there back in the 80s, and more than a few CDs in the decades since.
Vin Diesel worked behind the counter at Sounds before he became a movie star.

The indie record stores in and around Richmond, VA are definitely on the wane.
Plan 9 had built up to several stores around the state and are now down to two. The flagship store in Richmond's Carytown area has downsized twice in recent memory.
BK Music which was located in a former Peach's in Richmond's southside closed its doors about a week ago. It was opened and run for 8-10 years by the last Manager of that Peach's, Bill Kennedy. I was there the last week and he did say they were trying to find another location. The shopping center they were in was really got run down over the years but they stayed there anyway. Recently that area has seen a comeback and Bill was hoping to finally see an increase in business. Instead, the landlord recognized the comeback and raised the rent to an unaffordable rate.
In addition, the local mom and pop musical instrument store closed just after Christmas after 10+ years in business. They were competing just fine with Guitar Center and had a fiercely loyal patronage but it wasn't enough.
Just as the glow of Record Store Day is wearing off comes sad news (via EV Grieve) from EV mainstay Kim's Video & Music:
The 1st Ave store was the last of a once healthy NYC empire. It was also one of the last (maybe THE last?) places to find cult/foreign/import DVDs and Blu-Rays. Mondo Kim's on St. Mark's Place closed in 2009.

The era of the physical unit has ended in NYC. Hard to believe that a trip to NYC for the day will not include cd shopping. We'll at least NYC still has Broadway (saw ONCE last week and have tickets to The Book Of Mormons).

Kim's is now closing too
This was the only place in Manhattan I've been going to the last few years. There's now no need to go to NYC for CDs anymore.
Kim's and Mondo Kim's were regular stops on any NY visit. Even stores with tremendous depth of catalog just can't compete with Amazon warehouse distribution model...

If it's available, it's available somewhere on the net. No store can compete with that. It did certainly take the steam out of the fun of record shopping.

I hadn't ordered anything from the site for a few years, especially as I ordered more on Discogs. I did find some great surf and psych imports on GEMM.

They were generally over priced unless there was a sale but still they were fun to browse through as the wife would clothes shop in the mall. Met Joe Pepitone in the Massapequa one many years back.

Wow, Joe Pepitone. Loved that guy. I remember "The Scooter" givng Joe a hardtime about his long hair and playboy image. Most of it was in good fun though.
