The Sony Blu-Ray player I just bought can also play SACDs, so I was wondering if anyone could recommend any particular discs.

I'm mainly interested in surround, but if there's an stereo SACD with outstanding sound, I might be persuaded to get it.

I just played the SACD 5.1 of The Who's Tommy and it sounds great. It's a hybrid disc from the deluxe edition.

I just ordered my favorite Aerosmith album Toys In The Attic on SACD because the 5.1 mix has gotten raves. Too bad they cancelled the release of my second fave Aero album, Rocks. I believe the 5.1 mix was done, but never released.

So if anyone wants to give a shout out for their favorite SACD(s)....by all means, please do! :yay:

A no-brainer pick up would be the 30th Anniversary edition of Dark Side Of The Moon... still cheap and easily available, with enough going on in the surround mix to keep you interested.

I highly recommend the SACD of Oasis' (What's The Story) Morning Glory?:

It is possibly the worst surround mix ever done, and virtually unlistenable. Why spend hours carefully matching components, comparing the best cables and positioning your speakers for the ultimate in hi-rez audio? Just play this SACD, and every other disc you own will suddenly sound like a Barry Diament remaster.

It's horrible, but I own it.

Not much of an Oasis fan, so I probably wouldn't be getting it anyway. But thanks for chiming in, Linda!

I've just recently started collecting SACDs and DVD-As, 'cause I bought a player a few months ago. I just got the SACD dual disc of Pretenders II in the mail today. Sounds great.

Does your player also handle DVD-A? The DVD-A versions of Chicago II and V sound wonderful. Assuming you're a Chicago fan, of course. They're out of print and pricey, though.

The DVD-A of David Crosby's If I Could Only Remember My Name is pretty amazing.

if you can still find them, the Hybrid Rolling Stones SACD's are the best sounding SACD's I've heard.

Keep in mind a big part of the sound is still going to be your player's Analog audio circuitry. As I've learned, SACD on a $100 SACD player often will sound slightly worse then cd on a high end player. That still says some very positive things about the SACD format, that it's even listenable on a $100 player!

Now if your Sony has quality audio circuitry, you're likely in for a huge treat.

I do have the Stones Singles Collection that's an SACD hybrid as well as the hybrid SACDs of the Creedence catalog. They sound pretty good to me.

It doesn't have DVD-A capability, so I'd have to listen to the Dolby Digital or DTS surround tracks in order to get 5.1.

The Singles collection is one of the Stones SACD's I have also. Good stuff!

Chris...are you a Dylan fan? My favorite SACD is Nashville Skyline. The production lends iteslf to a more sparse sending record than others mentioned in your thread but I swear when I heard Dylan and Cash doing Girl From The North Country on SACD I got chills. Sounded to me like they were in the room. Very warm, very real.

Murdog, not really a Dylan fan. I have the essential 2 disc collection just for the sake of having it, but I've probably listened to it only once or twice. I think Dylan's a great songwriter, but I can't get past his voice.

For the same reason, I don't like Van Morrison either. His voice is is too nasal, shrill and grating to my ears.

I like all of the Stones SACDs. Also, if you are into Jazz, Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue" and Di Meola, McLaughlin, de Lucia 's "Saturday Night in San Francisco" are two of my favorites.

Steely Dan "Gaucho" SACD...I've never heard this album sound better. Even the Redbook CD layer is excellent.

I have the DTS surround version of Gaucho, RoyalScam. While I'm aware that Eliot Scheiner did a new surround mix for the SACD, I have read reviews that say it's not vastly different from the DTS version, so I'm good.

But thanks for the recommendation, at any rate. Too bad they didn't do Aja. I read they were going to, but the multitracks to the title track had gone missing. :sigh:
