Before I start looking around online, I figured I'd check here first.
My 80 GB iPod was filling up, and I thought I would delete albums off of it.
I deleted about 15 albums in iTunes and re-synced iPod. However, in looking at my iPod, I see I still have the same amount of used GB even though all of the albums are no longer on iPod.

Am I missing something here? Shouldn't I have freed up some space?

Thanks for any info you might have.

That does sound odd. Do you have an archived iTunes library? Perhaps the library from which you deleted albums isn't the same version that's linking to your iPod. I know it's a stretch, but that's all I can think of.

Try turning the iPod off and back on. Sometimes an iPod won't reset things right away. Also, are you sure that in the syncing process your iTunes didn't put the missing albums right back on you iPod? This could happen if you have told your iTunes program to do certain things in the syncing process.

Off/on didn't do anything. And the songs definitely aren't on my iPod. Will do further research and I'll post if I find any answers.

Are you deleting from iTunes or your iPod?
If your iPod...do you have it set to sync only checked items
and if so are those select items checked.
If from iTunes,,.are you opting to send those files to the recycle bin
or leaving them in your iTunes library.

>what bit rate are you encoding?
Encoding AAC MPEG-4

>do you have any podcasts loaded?
No

>Are you deleting from iTunes or your iPod? are you opting to send those files to the recycle bin or leaving them in your iTunes library.

iTunes, and for the most part the files are long deleted. Once I sync iTunes with iPod, I remove the audio files completely from my hard drive. All of these albums were in my iTunes library, but the audio file associated with them are long off my computer.

What I did was remove all the associate albums off my iTunes library, synched my iPod and found the songs were also off my iPod, but free space available did not change, nor did the total number of songs (13,306).

I tried doing some research online yesterday and didn't find anything. Any suggestions from this board is greatly appreciated.

Last week, I had lunch with Herr Smiff.

Yeah, I know, I never learn...

Anyway...

I'm seriously contemplating getting an Ipod for the first time. Smiff told me that I need to have an equal amount of gigabytes on my computer to store the music. But if I'm uploading from my own CD collection, can't I simply delete the files once they're uploaded...? :o

Please advise.

If you are going through the trouble to rip your music from your CDs into iTunes, it would be wasteful to delete it from your computer after copying it to the iPod, since you may need to move it to the iPod again (in case of some 'disaster').

But you certainly could just rip & move it to the iPod & delete it from your computer if you want. I've never had to replace any music I've ever moved to any of my iPods in all the years that I've used them.

That's what I figured. I've put off buying one for years, but I'm always saying that I wish I had more choice when I'm driving in the car, to and from work, which is a big chunk of time out of my day.

I'll bring a CD or two in the morning, then NOT be in the mood for that type of music later on.

I'm pretty close to getting one. It's time. :ohyes:

You have a car system that you can plug a iPod into?

I delete the files off my computer after I sync my iPod since the CDs are in my collection and I can just put back on my computer if I need to

I'm going to have to run it off my FM receiver until my next car. My car is pre-IPod.

My 8 year old laptop bit the dust last week and with it all my songs and my Itunes library. :(

So now when my current IPOD Touch bites the big one, I'll be forced to re-do my entire library once again and try and replace all those apps. Damn.

Finally decided to download album artwork for the songs I've uploaded into iTunes and my iPod. The auto method managed to get maybe half the stuff and maybe 20% of that stuff is all wrong so I've been manually fixing them today. One of the many annoyances of the auto method - almost all "Greatest Hits" albums now show the Stray Cats Greatest Hits as their artwork. Ugghh!

Yep, it takes time to get the proper album covers on all of the downloaded album's. And the greatest hits albums are the toughest.

Dean,

What happens when you try to add new music? WIll it still put those on the iPod without wiping the stuff you deleted from your computer?

Yeah. It only syncs up what I have recently added and doesn't do anything to the songs already there.

I HIGHLY recommend either keeping stuff on the PC, or better yet, getting an external drive and keeping it all on there (easier to move to a new computer). One of the big drawbacks to the iTunes/iPod stuff is that it's not easy to take your stuff from the iPod back to the PC. That's one place where my Creative Zen had it all over the iPod - it was much more flexible moving stuff back and forth (and I liked how it managed playlists on the player much better, too). I know this from experience - I deleted a bunch of my CDs from the PC, and now have to re-rip them so my wife can put them on her Touch (and so I can put them on my Shuffle).

And I don't usually do artwork - no real benefit for me, plus it takes up too much space. I'm already having to decide which albums I can and can't keep on the iPod because it's only 80GB (and if Creative had come out with one with a big enough drive, I'd buy that).

I embed the artwork in the tag, downloaded and tagged by Mediamonkey from Amazon, or if unavailable, I grab the cover art from discogs.com. Doesn't take up much space at all that way.
