Hi there, surpringly the following issue has not had much traction in the press, and actually has not had much of a stir in the IT Community, but that has been changing of late, and we'll soon be bombarded.

DST will be 3 weeks earlier (and one week later) this year (3-11/11-4).

Basically all computers needs to be patched. There is an update, which will become ID'd as critical in the next couple of weeks. The killer is the patch updates the DST database in the registry, but does not refresh your computers settings - which are held within a Control Set within the registry. This needs to be refreshed. Rebooting does not refresh. Basically, as a user, you would need to use the time/date applet; change from exisiting time zone to another, apply, and change it back. I have tested and verified this requirement after reading/viewing MS webcasts.

The implications get very involved with networks and if you consider other technologies which deal with DST. For a company, the most obvious to users would be using Outlook/Exchange calanders. Meetings will be messed up. There are actual, more involved issues if apps are deally with calcs using time - example, job costing.

Updating a computer does not necessarily make everything in the clear, as some apps get the system time from the workstation, but others, such as Exchange, handle DTS individually.

Also important that both ends get updated asap...if I'm patched and request a meeting, and you are not, you'd be late (or early).

Using MS as an example, the following apps have to deal with their own individual patching, and again, items needs to be patched in quick succession...

Windows Client
Windows Server
Windows Mobile
Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services
Microsoft Exchange Server
Microsoft Office Outlook
Microsoft Dynamics CRM
Microsoft Biztalk Server
Microsoft SQL Server Notification Services
Microsoft Entourage

Obviously, phone systems, time clocks, 3rd party apps ect would also need to be checked and updated. Also, MS has some of the patches, but not all.

You can read all about it here if interested

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/timezone/dst2007.mspx

This is the tip of the iceburg...if you are in IT, and have not read up on, do so....if you have not heard much about this in your company, and you care, you may wish to give a heads up to management.

I just want to say that I resent losing an hour...especially on a weekend.

It always happens on a weekend. But I agree wholeheartedly that the jump forward in the Spring sucks, while the fall back in the Fall is niiiice.

We need Spring to get here as fast as possible.

I don't know how the weather is where you are but here, yowzer! It is one nasty night.
A NorEaster is roaring up the coast and the wind is howling.
All I hear are fire sirens all day and night.
We're getting water inside the house that I;ve never seen before.....I thought one of the kids has splashed water in the living room but nope.... their is a small leak off the front roof due to the high winds.

Weather here was sunny clear blue skies with a moderate temperature. It seemed like Spring to me!

We just got our power back here after an hour in the dark (a few towns over from JohnG). Good thing we cancelled Saturday Night at the Movies in NYC tonight.

But you had battery backup/UPS on your stereo systems so that
you could listen to CDs in the dark, though, right? Right?

True, but I'd rather they leave it one way or the other. Personally, I'd rather have the extra hour of sunlight later in the day.

Many hardcoded devices like watches and VCRs still have pre-2007 daylight savings time built in, annoyingly. Also, Indiana used to not have it and now it does.

Before, we would just be on Eastern part of year and Central part of the year, but we'd never have to change our watches. Now we're permanently Eastern time, except northwest Indiana, which is Central time.

Around the block a tree fell knocking out a transformer that then started a fire. I could see the orange glow from my house. Our block so far has been ok.

It really is a bad night on LI. I've here since 1991 and have never seen a storm this bad.

I'm afraid to even turn on the TV in case of a power outage that could damage the set.

+1. I hate changing the clocks and losing that hour - especially this year because we're refereeing a soccer tournament this weekend, with games starting at 7:30 AM today and 8:00 AM tom'w.

Besides the problem of some devices having the pre-2007 schedule is trying to remember which devices go automatically and which ones are wrong. Most years, not that big a deal, but as I mentioned, this year I have to be somewhere early.

This is one of the reasons I want to move to Phoenix...

Alan

On the one hand, I love DST, & think it should be on YEAR AROUND.

On the other hand, I HATE losing that hour of sleep for the 1st day or 2!
