I can't believe it, but Billboard says it's true. New song, new album and possibly a supporting tour. Hooray!

The song clip they posted on Facebook is actually pretty good. I'm looking forward to hearing the whole song.

I've been listening to the Cars a lot in my car recently. It would be neat to see them.

Fewer opportunities to listen to Jefferson Airplane?

I'm realizing here (as I google The Cars) that I've never heard anything (that I can remember hearing, anyway) off of their final album, "Door To Door". I'm not sure why it slipped below my radar back in 1987, other than I apparently wasn't listening to much FM radio or watching MTV or anything like that. Any thoughts or reccommendations on this album from any ICEers?

Not just Ocasek, but David Robinson, too, who also sat out The New Cars.

That said, I didn't think The New Cars were that bad...Rundgren looks like a non-anorexic version of Ric to begin with, and he can make his voice sound like pretty much anything he wants to make it sound like. He did a good impression.

Elliot's guitars and Greg's synths and backing vocals (ESPECIALLY Greg's backing vocals) really turned out to be a bigger part of their sound than I'd ever given them credit for previously.

Fortunately Ocasek's voice is VERY similar to Orr's (if they tour).

Knew I should have posted that item from the Boston Globe about the rehearsals the band was having, but it slipped my mind when I was here. I'm glad The Cars are back. Won't be the same without Ben Orr, but I look forward to a new album and tour.

I just remember that their 1988 breakup seemed so abrupt -- like it came out of nowhere.

And I like Door To Door -- not as good as say, the first album, or Heartbeat City, but it has some good tracks.

Their Facebook page has been posting teaser photos of them in the studio for a couple months now. The fans have been getting pretty worked up. Then, as Mike M posted above, they released a song clip via FB as well. As Geff touched on, I would think and hope they would do some of Ben's songs on tour. He did sing some of their best songs and it would be a nice way to honor that.

I'm wondering if they'll get a bassist with a similar voice to cover Ben Orr's parts live.

Great news-love this band to death. Their songs still sound fresh today. Elliot Easton is an underrated guitar genius. I will see them in a heartbeat (city).

Yeah- it wasn't until much later that I realized that Ben had sung lead on anything other than "Drive," and then I realized he'd actually done like a third of each album and half of the singles.

I had the same experience.

+ 2

As for 'Door to Door', I agree with Chris. It's not much like the earlier albums (at times it sounds more like one of Ocasek's solo discs, and one song reminds me of The The's 'Infected' album), but it contains some good songs that bear repeated listening.
