My wife says one of the things she loves about me is that I make her laugh. But I know that's just something women say. As Bill Hicks once said, women say a sense of humor is what they most look for in a man "but I don't see you throwing your panties up here".

Example...last Saturday, we went to Chick-Fil-A for lunch. At a table near us was a young couple with their children - three boys and a fourth child in a carrier that we couldn't see from where we were (we could see a foot, but that was it). My wife says, "I was just looking at that young family over there with the three young boys, and I wonder what the one in the carrier is."

I said, "Overkill?"

I think when they say a sense of humor, it really means someone who is pleasant and not mean or angry. If you smile easily and can be self-deprecating its a great signal that you won't go all self-obsessed rage monster on them after a few dates.

For the most part - "they" just don't get the Marx Bros, the Three Stooges, WC Fields, Buster Keaton, Abbott & Costello, Laurel and Hardy, Harold Lloyd - they have a sense of humor - it is just different...

Anyone who thinks women lack a sense of humor needs to meet the women in my life. Most of them are far funnier than the majority of men I know.
(Note to Linda: Some of the very best senses of humor among my friends belong to redheads, including #1.)

True story - I once broke up with a serious girlfriend a) on Valentine's Day; b) after she'd given me a present - and I hadn't gotten her one because, well, I'm a guy. There were several issues that led to it, but the straw that broke the camel's back? We went to a Three Stooges film festival, ON VALENTINE'S DAY, seven Curly shorts, and she didn't laugh once.

That's when I knew.

BTW, my wife does have a sense of humor - she got quite a chuckle tonight after we got home from the Ted Nugent/Val Halla show (rant in the concerts thread coming soon). Val Halla was the opening act, and she was pretty good, and I bought her CD and got her to sign it and got a picture with her. After we got home and I thoroughly failed to thrill the children with the story, I walked into the bedroom and said to my wife, "Can I just point out that while I, like any other human, desire happiness and strive to be happy, I have resisted the urge tonight to say anything about a desire to be in Val Halla?"

I once knew a gal who loved the Three Stooges, Marx Brothers - all the comedy teams I mentioned, also Frank Zappa, Lenny Bruce and she was HOT and also the most intelligent person I have ever known...but being young I never knew how precious that was...if only I could turn back time ...35 years...

Actually, when I've mentioned to people in real life over the years that I own a large collection of Britney Spears stuff, they've seldom believed me. These days, it's a lot of fun when a co-worker or somebody asks my fiancee if I really do own a hundred-plus Britney CD's, and she is able to answer "yes" with a completely straight face. Let's face it--my fascination with Britney notwithstanding--the collection is designed to dumbfound people, especially those who hate her. I started gathering Britney's music eight or nine years ago as a lighthearted gesture, as a way of poking fun at my own obsessive-compulsiveness in regards to music collecting. It's only been in recent years, upon discovering the vast amount of sheer hatred she inexplicably inspires in people that I realize how my Britney collection has a certain power over people that none of my other various collections can muster.

In other words, I wouldn't marry a woman who is so insecure that a box full of Britney Spears junk would inspire her to fits of hateful jealousy, or to actively root for Britney to die. Ugh. Been there, done that. If I have to dispose of a Britney Spears CD in order to gain a woman's affections, that woman is obviously very shallow.

As for why she's marrying me, I have no earthly idea. I guess she has a sense of humor or something.

I wouldn't think it was jealousy a woman would run away because of the Britney collection-I'd think more of fear! Obviously you met someone who doesn't mind and that's what matters. Now, if you had a Britney "collage" in your kitchen she might think otherwise.

How about a Britney collage in the bedroom just above the bed?

Congratulations, you lucky dog. How does she feel about the Marx Brothers, Three Stooges, Laurel & Hardy, and Abbott & Costello?

One great thing about my wife is we share a love of similar comedy (for instance we both enjoy Flight Of THe Conchords). Both think "Its A Gift" is one of the greatest comedies ever.

My wife watches Warren The Ape with me. That show is so damn funny and so crude that's a great thing. I have always had success with women because of humor (and I hope to a small degree the rest of me) and I have almost always dated women who are funny as well.
My Mom is damn funny too! And my sister is pretty funny as well, so I say yes, women do have a real sense of humor. Not Paula Poundstone or Margaret Cho though. Ugh.

My wife's sense of humor doesn't mesh perfectly with mine. We agree on a lot - Python, Kids In The Hall, Conchords, Kevin Smith, Louis CK, Gilbert Gottfried, Robert Schimmel, Craig Shoemaker, Craig Ferguson, Lewis Black, Daily Show. Some of the more 'out there' stuff I like she's not so fond of - Doug Stanhope, David Cross, etc. And she doesn't like Colbert as much.
