So the boy and I went to the Frozen Four in Detroit last weekend. The hockey could have been better - I saw a report that said it was the least competitive Frozen Four in 40 years (8-1, 7-1 and 5-0 finals). The championship game was competitive into the third period before Boston College pulled away - and the BC fans were great. They were one section to our right, the Wisconsin fans were two to our left. At one point, the WIsconsin band started playing "The Time Warp" and their fans started dancing it. The BC fans started dancing the Macarena, and when the song was over, they chanted "That was stupid!" College hockey is fun!

But I digress - during our down time, we went to a Tigers game and the Motown Museum, which is located in Berry Gordy's old house, the same one that housed Motown. You can't take pics inside, but they have quite a few things kept the way they were way back went - old phones, equipment, furniture, etc. You get to see the control room (much smaller than you'd think) and you get to go into Studio A (it's no longer an active studio). Very, very cool to be in the room where so much great music was made (and I'm not even a huge Motown fan). Our tour guide was very entertaining.

If you ever get the chance to go, it's well worth it. Kind of sad, though, to see some of the surrounding areas. My son was most fascinated with the damage done by riots up there, and how much of it hasn't been repaired.

Detroit hasn't been worth visiting since they closed Tiger Stadium.

My understanding is that the recession has really impacted Michigan badly.

We drove to Joe Louis Arena on our way home (to take pictures in front of the sign and their Stanley Cup display in our Penguins jerseys!), and the section of town we drove through on our way back to the highway was both depressed and depressing. It was really run down and desolate. Very sad. Downtown itself wasn't too bad - it seemed no worse than downtown Pittsburgh, for example, and better in some regards. But it's not like that everywhere. Funny, though - tons of people pouring into the casino while we were in town.
