Do not question Our Linda, Ven. She is a librarian, after all. 8-)

I was questioning the rules themselves, not Linda. I'm sure she didn't create the rules. And rules, after all, don't always make sense.

My personal preference is to ignore all punctuation, unless it's not possible to do so because the punctuation mark is a "word" in the name (like "!!!" or "? And The Mysterians"). I also ignore all spaces, so "Menudo" (if I had any) would come before "Men Without Hats."

Yet another reason to avoid alphabetizing. Plus, who actually has room to store their CDs in any logical fashion anymore!

I fear that someday there'll be a news report about a Long Island man who died after opening a closet and an avalanche of CDs buried him.

The most frustrating thing is when you have multiple shelves lined up against a wall, and they're all stuffed with discs ... then you buy another "A".

:ohyes:

True regardless of how you sort. On a few occasions when a new album is released, I have even sought out slimline doubles of an older set to replace clamboxes or 2 CD sets that were once in separate cases (most recently Neil Young's Decade) just to avoid throwing off the organization I have been able to maintain with the few remaining display shelves I have.

Definitely an art, not a science. My "genres" are broken down by within eras and very idiosyncratic, such that all my British Invasion discs are at the top of my '60s rack, led by the tops in the field -- Beatles, Rolling Stones, Who and Kinks.

Ven wrote:
As for alphabetization of the solo catalogs of group members: for me it depends on whether I think the solo body of work is clearly distinct and separable from the group's work. McCartney and Wings are clearly intertwined, as are Rundgren/Utopia, Duran Duran/Arcadia, etc. (Some I struggle with, like Buggles/Yes.) But Crosby, Stills, Nash, and their various combinations are each alphabetized separately, not all in one "CSN" section.

I guess I follow that breakdown as well -- CSN(Y) is in my '60s section with the other late '60s folk/rock groups, but the C/S/N/Y solo and duo stuff is with my '70s SoCal stuff like the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Jackson Browne, etc. It's organized with the duo stuff first, followed by each of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young solo, in that order.

Wings is definitely within McCartney solo material, which is relegated to underbed storage with other solo material from fellow Beatles and former/current members of other British Invasion groups (solo Stones, solo Who, solo Kinks, etc.).

Duran Duran and Arcadia also also together, although Arcadia follows the entire Duran Duran catalogue and does not break up the chronological order of the DD albums.

A number of these classifications spring purely out of space issues. So Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell are in a separate underbed storage container with other folk/'70's singer/songwriter material simply because I don't have any more room on my '60s (or even '70s SoCal) shelves.

Enough to drive you crazy, eh, Ven?

It's amazing how often, say, Windows gets this wrong. Especially annoying when "2.jpg" is grouped with "20.jpg".

Well, I wasn't organizing CD's per se--I'm just trying to make sense of Elvis's studio catalog (and all of the countless alternate takes that have been officially released over the years) and the easiest starting point for me is alphabetical by song title. Most Elvis discographies tend to be organized by recording date, but I'm not quite there yet.

This is why I learned a long time ago to leave space for about 5 or 6 discs at the end of each shelf. That way I don't have to shift everything around nearly as often.

I use the Ven method myself, both of them.

It's obvious we all need the K-tel CD Organizer...

Now I understand why Linda dislikes Christina Aguilera so much.

I file the same way.
First I start with the group & then solo projects.
Beatles section, then solo sections for J P G & R.
Easier to find things that way.

I am in a dilemma with all my CD cabinets overflowing and no more wall space.
Started to put CDs into CD Booklets and put the artwork in a sep box.

I got rid of my spinning stand and bought three smaller, taller cases from Ikea.

I should have gotten four. The Springsteen box set pushed me over the edge.

Dick: I guess it looks as if you're reorganizing your records. What is this though? Chronological?
Rob: No...
Dick: Not alphabetical...
Rob: Nope...
Dick: What?
Rob: Autobiographical.
Dick: No fucking way.
