Cilla Black dies, aged 72
Former singer and TV presenter Cilla Black dies at her Spanish home, aged 72

Cilla Black has died at her Spanish home, local police have confirmed.

The much-loved TV star and singer is believed to have died of natural causes after being found at her home in Marbella.

“I can confirm the death of British national Priscilla White, aged 72,” police said.

Cilla Black, the presenter's stage name, was born Priscilla Maria Veronica White on May 27, 1943.

A Spanish police officer added: “We are still awaiting autopsy results but everything at this stage is pointing towards her death being the result of natural causes.”

The Liverpoon-born star enjoyed her first taste of fame at the city's Cavern Club, where she performed alongside acts including The Beatles and Gerry and the Pacemakers.

She went on to release 14 albums but later established herself as a television personality, presenting hit shows including Surprise Surprise and Blind Date.

In 1968, she became the first woman to have her own prime-time chat show on BBC One.

In more recent years, despite suffering from arthritis and deafness, she remained in the public eye. Her rise to stardom was recently told in award-winning three-part drama, Cilla, starring Sheridan Smith.

Most of the shutters were down at the entertainer’s house near Marbella on Sunday morning and there was no answer on the door.

However, a light outside the property was on, a grey Seat Ibiza car was parked outside and the back patio doors appeared to be open.

Police sources said they thought the death had occurred overnight and they believed Cilla, who suffered from hearing problems and arthritis, had jetted to Spain a few days ago with one of her three sons

A Spanish man who identified himself as a police officer was stood outside the front of the property talking on the phone before driving off in a Seat Alhambra car around midday local time.

The man, who refused at first to say who he was, declined to comment on the health of the property's occupant.

An immediate neighbour added: “I don’t really know who lives next door. The wall between my house and theirs is very high and I don’t know anything.”

In a recent interview, the musician and TV star said she did not want to live beyond the age of 75.

"Seventy-five is a good age to go if things start to drop off," Cilla said.

"I don't want to linger. I don't want to be a burden on anybody. I know 75 is only four years away, but I take each day as I find it."

She has always been one of my favorites.
She was not as big here as elsewhere, but I forever link her with Petula Clark, Sandie Shaw and Dusty.

Rest In Peace .

"Such a shock to hear about Cilla's passing," said Sir Paul McCartney. "She was a lovely girl who infected everyone with her great spirit.

"From first meeting her as a cloak room girl at the Cavern in Liverpool, to seeing her many times since, she always had a fun-loving dignity that made her a great pleasure to be around."

Songwriter Burt Bacharach, who worked with Black, said: "It will always be a most special memory for me of recording her on Alfie in Abbey Road Studios in 1965."

Other tributes have come from comedian Jimmy Tarbuck, who said she had "warmth in bundles", and Ringo Starr, who remembered her as "a good friend".

I had a nice surprise a few years ago when Amazon launched their cloud player and I found several Cilla tracks in mine. I wondered what I had done to deserve such a gift, but then I remembered letting a friend use my Amazon account to order a Cilla Black boxed set a few years before. Those tracks have gotten a lot of plays around here.

To echo what Kid Bailey said above, Cilla earned her place alongside the other great UK female singers of the sixties. Rest in peace, Ms. Black.

D-u-r-n, another 60s Brit chick taken too soon. She was a constant presence on the UK telly when I was there (65-68).
Love this video of Alfie, recorded at Abbey Road. Great commentary by George Martin, Burt Bacharach, and Cilla...

R.I.P.

She was one of the greatest pop singers of her generation, which was quite an achievement given the company she was in.

I first saw this clip when we were visiting Studio 2 at Abbey Road in 2013.
I was familiar with Cilla's version, but not as much as Dionne Warwick's..

Watching and listening to it then as well as now made me realize how much she just completely nailed that performance.
I think it outdoes the other by a mile. Such real emotion in it - as though she had written the words herself from real life.

Well done Cilla. RIP.

Coroner rules Cilla Black died of a traumatic head injury sustained during a fall

A coroner has ruled that Cilla Black died of a traumatic head injury sustained during a fall at her Spanish home.

The ruling was made at Liverpool Coroner's Court today (August 14) by Andre Rebello. He recorded a verdict of accidental death. Black will be buried in Liverpool on Thursday next week.

BBC News reports that Rebello addressed Black's three sons, Ben, Robert and Jack, during the 15-minute hearing.

"She was a daughter of Liverpool and was celebrated and loved by all in Liverpool," he told the three men. "She was your mum and her death is a private personal matter and we have all got one mum. It is right that you grieve and remember her."

Black's funeral will be held on August 20 at St Mary's Church in Woolton and will be officiated by The Right Reverend Thomas Williams, Auxiliary Bishop of Liverpool and former Parish Priest of St Anthony's, Scotland Road.

After the funeral, Black's body will be buried at a private ceremony in Allerton Cemetery. Black's parents are also buried in the cemetery. Her late husband, Bobby Willis, was cremated in 1999.

A representative for Black asked for privacy and confirmed that further details would be released "once all the preparations have been finalised".
