LOS ANGELES — Lil Wayne – the most prolific, ubiquitous and successful performer on today's music scene – was the most rewarded by the Recording Academy on Wednesday, receiving eight Grammy nominations including album of the year for Tha Carter III.

Following close behind was Coldplay, whose Viva La Vida is one of the year's bestselling CDs. It was in album of the year contention, along with Radiohead for their groundbreaking CD In Rainbows; singer-songwriter Ne-Yo's Year of the Gentleman; and Robert Plant's collaboration with Alison Krauss, Raising Sand.

The nominations were announced in a brand-new format: with a live prime-time CBS concert special.

Coldplay and Plant and Krauss were also nominated in the coveted record of the year category for the respective songs “Viva La Vida” and “Please Read the Letter.” Other record of the year nominees were British songstress Leona Lewis for “Bleeding Love”; another British newcomer, Adele, for chasing pavement; and M.I.A. for her breakthrough hit, “Paper Planes.”

Some surprising omissions: Katy Perry, who had one of the year's biggest hits with “I Kissed a Girl,” was shut out of the top categories, including record of the year and best new artist.

While Lil Wayne'e Tha Carter III was not regarded as his greatest CD, it was the album that made the highly regarded veteran a pop superstar, thanks to massive hits like “Lollipop” and “A Milli.” The CD was the only record this year to sell one million copies in its first week.

Coldplay's Viva La Vida was its first album in three years, and was also a huge hit.

Radiohead's In Rainbows didn't break sales records, but was as revolutionary as it was critically acclaimed. It was first released last fall –not in stores, but a in a pay-as-you wish format on the band's website. It was an instant viral sensation, and also shook up the already beleaguered recording industry, which is struggling with its traditional business model (although Radiohead later released the album traditionally via a record label).

Plant linked up with Grammy darling and bluegrass artist Alison Krauss for a CD that pushed both in different musical directions, while Ne-Yo, who has produced several smashes for other artists, had success with Year of the Gentleman.

Also nominated were The Jonas Brothers for the best new artist category. While they have already released two CDs, their latest, A Little Bit Longer, was their biggest yet in their breakthrough year. The teen sensations join Duffy and Adele, both U.K. singers with a soul bent; singer-songwriter Jazmine Sullivan; and breakout country act Lady Antebellum.

Canadian nominees included Neil Young for best solo rock vocal performance, Rufus Wainwright for best traditional pop vocal album, Alberta's Northern Cree for best Native American music album and perennial favourite Walter Ostanek of St. Catharines, Ont., for best polka album.

The Recording Academy typically has announced nominations like most top awards shows, during a morning news conference. But in an era where awards shows are as commonplace as reality shows, even the top-tier events are finding it hard to stand out.

So they put on the prime-time event, which kicked off with past Grammy winner Mariah Carey singing a song from her classic Christmas album, decked out in a short red minidress to give some holiday cheer.

LL Cool J and Taylor Swift were the shows hosts. Swift, who at just 18 has become one of country and pop's best-selling stars, was a best-new artist nominee last year.

“The Grammy Nominations Concert Live! – Countdown to Music's Biggest Night,” held at the Nokia Theatre, also celebrated the Saturday opening of the new Grammy Museum next door.

The Grammy Awards are scheduled for live broadcast on CBS on Feb 8. Last year's show drew 17.2 million viewers, making it one of the least-watched Grammys and continuing the trend of shrinking awards-show audiences.

"Mercy" not up for Record of the Year? Surprising.

I also thought that Glen Campbell's album would be a natural Grammy magnet, guess not.

Coldplay vs. Radiohead for Best Album. After Herbie Hancock won last year, I wouldn't even hazard a guess about this year's race.

Sir Paul gets a couple noms for the limited-edition, vinyl-only Amoeba's Secret.

Alison Krauss and Robert Plant have a GREAT shot.

I had considered 'Bleeding Love' as a strong single, but figured 'Mercy' would edge it out as a nominee. 'Chasing Pavement' and 'Bleeding Love' likely pushed 'Mercy' out of contention.

VERY surprised to see 'Paper Planes' there. It's kinda catchy (and I like the Clash sample), but I don't get it.

The Grammy's continue to top themselves for lack of taste IMO.

I like some of the selections, but overall this may be the least relevant group of nominated songs/performances ever. C'mon, McCartney for "I Saw Her Standing There" in 2008?

You'd think Duffy would win Best New Artist but the Jonas Brothers are getting pretty big.

I like both the Radiohead and Coldplay albums but I agree that Robert Plant and Alison Krauss have a real good shot at Album Of The Year.

Will Radiohead show up at the Grammy's?....thats the only way I'd watch the show.

We all know the Grammys are a musical debacle, but some good things did get nominated. And, I really hope Rush finally win for Best Rock Instrumental-they've lost so many times.
Coldplay, Daft Punk, Radiohead, Judas Priest, Metallica-all deserving of wins. Hope The Who win for the "Amazing Journey" DVD in that department as well-that was really well done.
It really does irritate me though that artists like Springsteen, Dylan, McCartney, etc. constantly get nominated every damn year, even for throwaway songs on comps or soundtracks or live albums, or even limited edition releases like this year with McCartney! Enough! These things don't deserve nominations in any way-it's just ridiculous. Shit, if McCartney recited the ingredients to a box of Tide detergent to harp music it would get nominated!

After reading the complete list now online I'm pleasantly surprised to see two nominations for Randy Travis (though I personally would've chosen Faith In You over Dig Two Graves), and also the scores for WALL-E and There Will Be Blood get recognized as well. Heck, even Gabriel's song from WALL-E Down to Earth got nominated. Don't really care about the rest of it though, but at least there were a couple worthy nominations in there that I can see.

Stevie Wonder, Jimi Hendrix, Queen music enters Grammy Hall Of Fame

Dec 1, 2008

Music including Jimi Hendrix's rendition of 'The Star Spangled Banner', Queen's 1977 single 'We are the Champions/We Will Rock You' and The Police's 1983 album 'Synchronicity' has been added to the Grammy Hall Of Fame.

The Hall Of Fame now has 826 titles, chosen by a members committee of historians and experts since its inception in 1973.

Many of the titles will form part of the Grammy Museum, a four-floor exhibition centre which is set to open in Los Angeles on December 6.

In total, 28 new titles have been added to the library, including Stevie Wonder's 'For Once in My Life', 'Sweet Home Alabama' by Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Ennio Morricone's soundtrack for 'The Good, The Bad And The Ugly', reports BBC

BB King is set to perform a cover of another entry, Louis Jourdan's 'Let The Good Times Roll', at a nomination ceremony at the Los Angeles Nokia Theatre on December 3.

M.I.A.'s baby is due on Grammy night

Dec 6, 2008

Fresh from the news that she has been nominated for Record Of the Year at the 2009 Grammy Awards, MIA has revealed that she may not be there to pick up the gong, should she win it.

The pregnant 'Paper Planes' star took to her Myspace page to tell the world that her baby is due on February 8, which happens to be the same night the Grammys take place.

In a post entitled 'Baby + Grammy' the singer writes: "IS DUE THE SAME DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, so either way i figured ill win."

She goes on to say that if she wins, she will 'never diss the Grammys' ever again.

According to the post, she is currently "in the studio on the grind".

The Four Tops inarguably deserve this award. Too bad it happened after the great Levi Stubbs passed away. Thanks for getting it right if belated.

Only Leo gets the gong? What about George Fullerton and Freddie Tavares, who were (pardon the pun) both instrumental in the design of the Stratocaster? Leo invented the Esquire/Telecaster on his own, but the Strat is the most widely used of all Fender's guitars, and Leo didn't come up with the Strat on his lonesome.

Predictable mix of flavour-of-the-months and pest-their-prime-ers. How on earth do Maroon 5 score a nomination for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals when their vocalist has a voice as excruciating as Adam Levine's? And how is Estelle's "American Boy" one of the best songs released this year? (It's okaaay, but do you think in 5 years time people are going to be like "wow, 'American Boy', that was one of THE best songs of the noughties....") And how is "Chasing Pavements" one of the best songs of the year? I still don't get what said Pavements are supposed to be a metaphor for.

No surprise, I only own 2 of the records in the op (Sheryl Crow & The Eagles (& no, I did NOT buy the Eagles from Walmart)), & the only selection I remotely agree with is the Sheryl Crow. I hope she wins since it was a left wing political recording.

Even when I was young & my tastes were considered "relevant", I always thought the grammy selections were a joke. Anyone remember the year Jethro Tull won for best heavy metal act?

City of Los Angeles waives massive Grammy fees

Jan 14, 2009

The city of Los Angeles has agreed to waive more than $100,000 in fees associated with the Grammy Awards, despite severe city budget shortfalls in recent months.

The LA City Council voted yesterday (January 12) to approve the measure waiving $124,163 in city fees for the massive event, which is set to be held February 8 at the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles.

Many people oppose this measure, saying waivers should not be granted to private entities, especially in light of the city's ailing economy, reports the Los Angeles Times.

"I wonder if the city of Los Angeles constituents, the voters, know that you're giving $100,000 or whatever it is, to the Grammy Awards," said mayoral candidate David Saltsburg. "This special-event fee money is to provide benefit to the community -- open to the public -- not to be used for commercial private entities."

Meanwhile, council member Jan Perry said that the Grammy Awards generate millions of dollars in revenue for Los Angeles.

"This is an event of international significance that puts an enormous spotlight on the city of Los Angeles, generates a lot of revenue in terms of hotels, restaurant, service opportunities," Perry said. "This is something that competitively…we cannot afford to risk losing to another major city."

Coldplay, Lil' Wayne, Jonas Brothers to perform at Grammys
