Eddie Van Halen Doesn’t Know Where David Lee Roth Is Living by Dave Lifton February 14, 2015
During his conversation at the Smithsonian on Thursday (Feb. 12), Eddie Van Halen took fans through his life’s journey. But there was one very important question that was left out: When will Van Halen make another record?
Fortunately, Rolling Stone was on hand and ran it by him after the event. However, Van Halen’s answer suggested that there hasn’t been much recent contact between the band’s two main creative forces. “I’d love to make a studio record,” he says. “Depends on everybody’s timing. I don’t know what Dave [Lee Roth] is up to now. I don’t know if he’s living in New York or Japan or wherever he is.”
Roth has kept a fairly low profile since the end of the tour in support of 2012’s A Different Kind of Truth. He surfaced (sort of) towards the end of 2014 to unveil a surreal Christmas song and, a month later, sat in with Foo Fighters on Dave Grohl’s birthday, at which time he revealed that he has shaved his head.
But even if the next Van Halen record is on the back burner for now, at least its namesake guitarist can revel in his son’s creative output. During the chat, he revealed that Wolfgang Van Halen has been working on a solo album, which could possibly be out by the end of the year. “Wait until you hear his record,” Eddie gushed. “This is not [his] pop talking, this is real talk, it blew my mind.”
(hennemusic) Van Halen will launch their latest release, "Tokyo Dome Live In Concert", with a rare TV performance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Thursday, April 2nd and the show's promotion for the appearance hints at an upcoming tour.
"In a daytime exclusive, the California rockers will take over Ellen's stage to perform one of their favorite songs as they embark on their Greatest Hits Tour!," reads the listing on the program's website. "They're some of the most talented, wildest and most exciting musicians of all time.
"Nearly all of Van Halen's albums have gone triple platinum, featuring iconic records like 'You Really Got Me,' 'Runnin' With The Devil' and 'Dancing In The Street.' Ellen and her audience will be dancing through the aisles when Van Halen brings the heat to the room!"
The rare TV appearance comes just two days after the March 31 release of the group's first live album with David Lee Roth. Recorded live at the Japanese venue on June 21, 2013, the package features a 25-song set delivering material from the band's original, classic era and 2012's "A Different Kind Of Truth", the group's first studio album with Roth in almost 30 years.

Van Halen plans a 39-date North American tour that will kick off July 5 in Seattle and run through Oct. 2 in Los Angeles.
The tour comes on the heels of the announcement of next week's release of Tokyo Dome Live in Concert, a live album recorded during the group's 2013 A Different Kind of Truth Tour. The album, the group's first live set to feature original singer David Lee Roth, features 23 songs spanning all seven of the group's albums with Roth.
Van Halen also will perform a concert on Hollywood Boulevard for Jimmy Kimmel Live (ABC, 11:35 p.m. ET) this Monday. The concert, which will air over two nights, makes the group's first U.S. television performance with Roth.
Van Halen toured the U.S. for five months in 2012, in support of the group's A Different Kind of Truth album, but a second leg was canceled. At the time, guitarist Eddie Van Halen told USA TODAY: "We bit off more than we could chew. … We went on tour earlier than we wanted to so we could play Madison Square Garden (it was scheduled for renovation at the time), and that threw the schedule out of whack."
A subsequent Japanese tour also was canceled when Van Halen developed diverticulitis.
The Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band will support dates on the tour. Tickets will go on sale starting April 4.
Announced Van Halen tour dates follow:
July
5 - White River Amphitheatre, Seatel
7 - Amphitheater Northwest, Portland, Ore.
9 - Concord Pavilion, Concord, Calif.
11 - San Manuel Amphitheater, San Bernardino, Calif.
Did anyone hear that David Lee Roth bloodied his nose swinging his mic stand on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night? Here's footage of them performing "Running With The Devil" and "Panama" on the show. You'll see a big band-aid across his nose in both clips.
(hennemusic) Despite frontman David Lee Roth injuring himself, Van Halen launched their new album, "Tokyo Dome Live In Concert", with a live performance on ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live on Monday.
The 8-song mini-concert that shut down Hollywood Boulevard got off to a shaky start when Roth cut his nose on the microphone during the opening number, "Panama."
The singer left the stage during the track before returning to advise the crowd of his injury and apologized as the group took a short break before restarting the performance after Roth was outfitted with a bandage across his nose.
Van Halen then ran through a greatest hits set that included "Panama", "Runnin' With The Devil", "Hot For Teacher", "Eruption", "You Really Got Me", "Dance The Night Away". Unchained" and "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love."
On Monday, the program aired footage of "Panama", "Runnin' With The Devil" and a portion of "Dance The Night Away", which saw Roth invite a girl up from the crowd to dance.
The late night show will broadcast additional material from the mini-concert tonight, Tuesday March 31st.

I had the Van Halen reissue "1984" in my hands today for $11.99 and I couldn't pull the trigger. I know I'll see this at least $2.00 bucks cheaper in 3 months. I heard the sound on the two that has been reissued isn't that much better than the HDCD's.

Rarities in the set sounds great, but not with DLR yelping them.
But damn, "In a Simple Rhyme" and "Dirty Movies"??? That might make me go.
Also, Wolfie, there were NO b-sides in DLR-era VH that weren't album tracks. Nice try though...
(hennemusic) Van Halen are currently in rehearsals for their summer tour of North America and the band are sharing video snippets of a pair of rarely-played, deep tracks from their catalog.
"Working on setlist ideas right now," tweeted bassist Wolfgang Van Halen recently. "Which 'deep cuts' or 'b-sides' would you like to hear on this upcoming #VanHalen tour??"
This week, the bassist posted some short video clips from rehearsals on Instagram. "Trying something new today at rehearsal..." he wrote as the band could be heard playing "Dirty Movies" from 1981's "Fair Warning" album.
Wolfgang followed the first clip up with a second, writing, "Another day, another rehearsal, another tune to try out..." as his father, Eddie, played the introduction to "In A Simple Rhyme" from 1980's "Women And Children First."
Van Halen will launch a North American tour in Seattle on July 5 in support of "Tokyo Dome Live In Concert", their first live release with David Lee Roth.

David Lee Roth Says Sammy Hagar Has a ‘Credibility Issue’
David Lee Roth says he’ll never perform Sammy Hagar-era Van Halen songs, and says the reasons are obvious. First, Roth was never sure about Hagar’s commitment to the work. Second, he says, the public has made it clear which edition they favor.
“Well, there’s a credibility issue there,” Roth said, back stage at the Billboard Music Awards. “Good, bad or in the middle, you know Roth means it; the other guy doesn’t. And that’s why it sold half as well — literally, Midas Bible half. Never did better than half. And why would you bring that into the proceedings? This hamburger don’t need no helper. Ain’t no rehearsing pants in my closet.”
Of course, Hagar has previously expressed his own opinion on this subject. “The difference between Dave and I in that band, besides all the other million things, is that he can’t sing any of the ‘Van Hagar’-era songs,” he explained in a 2012 interview with the Boston Phoenix (courtesy of Blabbermouth). “Maybe he could do ‘Finish What You Started,’ possibly.”
Last night marked Van Halen’s first appearance at the Billboard Music Awards, which aired on ABC from Las Vegas. Roth just released his second project since returning to Van Halen, a live set titled Tokyo Dome in Concert. There, as with the band’s on-going concerts since his return, the setlists have focused on albums from Roth’s initial 1974–85 tenure, interspersed with songs from their 2012 comeback album A Diffferent Kind of Truth.
Hagar’s principal work with Van Halen stretched from 1985–96. Both singers had subsequent reunions with the group: Roth returned in 1996, and Hagar was back for 2003–05. Roth has fronted Van Halen ever since.
Asked about a potential studio follow up to A Different Kind of Truth, Roth struck a hopeful if non-committal stance. “I’m always writing and have written with a number of other people,” he said. “And I would always look forward to doing it again with Van Halen.”
Saw Van Halen at the Billboard (while I was at a restaurant). and man I was losing my appetite as the song ensued.
And I just can't stand that smirk David Lee seems to always wear.
With those comments he made just recently I like to see Sammy wipe that smirk right off his face. And man, the Red Rocker would take him out in a NY minute.
