In case any of you living in or visiting southern California in the next few months might be interested, the Skirball is hosting a photography exhibit of Sunset Strip rock and roll billboards through mid-August. I'll be visiting family and friends in my home town of L.A. this summer, so I hope to make it to the museum.

----------

Rock & Roll Billboards of the Sunset Strip / Skirball Cultural Center -- March 24–August 16, 2015

Featuring more than twenty photographs of hand-painted billboards that dominated the Los Angeles landscape for almost two decades, this exhibition—displayed in the Skirball's community space known as the Ruby Gallery—brings to life a unique period in the history of rock & roll and the fabled Sunset Strip, whose nightclubs were the birthplace of rock & roll royalty. Photographer Robert Landau traces the billboard phenomenon from the breakthrough promotion for the debut album by the Doors in 1967 to the advent of MTV in the 1980s, which signaled the end of an era.

I wish it was larger, or at least they didn't post 15 of the 20 pictures from exhibit. Looks beautiful, but not sure how hard I'll try and see it.

I think they would be fun to see if the photographs were printed large so that the viewer could get a little bit of a sense of how big these billboards were, hanging high above Sunset.
