Off of the top of my head (and I'd have to pull out and play some of my discs here to be absolutely positive) there are two different versions of "Time Is On My Side" floating around on the ABKCO remasters--the "guitar intro: version and the "organ intro" version--and I believe the "guitar into" version is only on either "High Tide" or "Hot Rocks".

Hot Rocks definitely has some unique singles mixes, perhaps both on vols. 1 and 2.

But I haven't bought Hot Rocks or the Singles Collection yet. I haven't bought Rarities or Rock'n'Roll Circus yet, either.

The early versions of Hot Rocks sound terrible, avoid them like the plague. However the SACD versions sound far better.

The Singles Box Set is recommended for any Rolling Stones 60s rare stuff etc.

Besides two versions of "Time Is On My Side," as mentioned by AMW, there was some debate about a different version of "Ruby Tuesday" being used on some of the remastered comps, but I've never really worked out which have the correct single version and which have an alternate mix.

Hot Rocks has a live version of "Midnight Rambler," but I'm pretty sure it's taken from Ya-Ya's.

High Tides originally had different track lists in the US and UK, but the SACD was the same in both territories.

But if your looking to have every commercially released Stones recording, you don't really need all of these comps, but you do need something for some of the non-LP singles. The 3-CD Singles Collection covers all of those.

I know it's not one of the choices listed up top but......

Aren't some of the early recordings on the last side of "More Hot Rocks" just on that album?
(at least on CD)

The remastered "More Hot Rocks" added the studio version of "I've Been Loving You Too Long" without the overdubbed crowd noise found on "Got Live If You Want It!". I believe that the rest of the rare early recordings on "MHR" can also be found either in the 3-disc singles box set from 1989 or the 11-disc "1963-1965" singles box from earlier this decade.

Although it's a difficult read, this FAQ http://www.lukpac.org/stereostones/stones-cd-faq.txt is dense with informantion about the various mixes and versions to be found among the 2003 ABKCO remasters. And last year Miss Linda tipped me off to this teriffic, cross-indexed, song-by-song Stones discography http://www.timeisonourside.com/index2.html (scroll down to either "The Rolling Stones' Complete Discography" or "TrackTalk")

All of the SACD/DSD versions have the wrong version of "Ruby Tuesday".

Thanks Jay. Do you know if 40 Licks has the wrong version? Is that where it first surfaced?

To muddy the waters a little bit...

The first European pressing of Hot Rocks on London has a radically different mix of Satisfaction. It is the one where acoustic guitars and a piano are more prominent in the mix. Subsequent European versions on London feature a different mix, and that mix is different from the one used on the 2002 SACD hybrid version of Hot Rocks.

Jim,

I believe that 40 Licks also has the wrong version, but I am fairly certain that 40 Licks came out after the ABKCO reissues. I am not aware of any release of the correct version since the ABKCO SACD/DSD remasters.

Warren,

Good question. I have not heard that CD.
