I'm a huge Posies fan. A few months back I bought Big Star's live Columbia cd because Jon & Ken are all over it. I played it, enjoyed it & forgot about it. I'm on 2nd play tonight, & it's really good.
This is the only Big Star I've ever heard.
My question to Big Star Fans is: Is this cd representative of Big Star, or is it more that there is a huge Posies influence on this release? Is there a 2nd Big Star cd you'd suggest checking out that's similar to this one?

Geff,
It's been a while since I listened to the Columbia CD, but I remember it being very much a Big Star sound, which kind of surprised me, given how long it had been since they had played together, and Jon & Ken being in the band.
You need to check out Big Star. Given that you like this one, I'd start with #1 Record/Radio City, their first two albums on one CD. Third is also pretty great, but it's much more idiosyncratic and weird. #1 Record and Radio City are full of great pop/rock hooks, great songs, and great playing. I'll be surprised if you don't like them. It's not hard to see the influence they had on the Posies (I'm a big Posies fan, too.) Check out the thread in reissues about the recent remastered release of the first two albums.

I wish I would have had the $ for the SACD in the recent Concord sale!

I saw this listing for Big Star "Extended Versions [LIVE]" on AmazWAN, and am confused: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0007US7VM/?tag=imwan-20Is this just a distilled version of the Missouri live CD (with Ken and Jon of The Posies), or is it something else entirely?

The former. Unless you're a completist don't even bother with that one.
