I don't think there's a damn thing wrong with any of the last four studio albums by the Stones, except for the fact that it's taken twenty years to them to release them all, and that anything new they release is automatically doomed to suffer in comparison to their 60's and 70's classics.

Stones 1975 tour photo book:

http://www.genesis-publications.com/boo ... index.html

I would love to have a photo chronicle of the Stones' 1972 and '75 tours, as well as those by a few other bands, priced for the average slob. Obviously this is geared to collectors, as are all the books by this company.

Just throwin' it out there for what it's worth ...

I'm still thankful that I still have my copy of The Rolling Stones On Tour that I bought back in the '70s which documents the '75 U.S. Tour. The shots of Keith during the height of his elegantly wasted look is vividly captured in the book. Included in the book is a shot of the band just before they were to hit the stage on opening night of the tour and Keith is in agony with a toothache. This is the book that is credited to Leibovitz/Sykes Southern.

Did you see them on that tour?

No. Jimbo did however. He saw them at MSG and got to see the lotus flower opening at the beginning of the show as well as the inflatable phallus during "Starf****r".
My first show wasn't until the July 26, 1978 final show of the Some Girls tour. My heart still pines that I wasn't old enough to have seen them in '72 when Taylor was still with them.
I've told this story before, but I thought I was going to be taken up to the Cow Palace for one of the shows in '75 by one of my older brothers. One day, I noticed that he had two tickets for one of the shows on top of his dresser drawer in his room. I flew through the roof with joy because I was thinking what a cool brother he was to do that knowing what a huge fan I was. Later on, my brother ended up having to pitch for his baseball team he was on at the time on the same night and he ended up having to sell his tickets. He has never told me the whole story. But I think he wasn't planning on taking me anyway. He was going to go with a friend of his that he was tight with at the time. I basically didn't speak to my brother for about 2 weeks after that. In the Summer of '75, I was in between 7th and 8th Grade and I had been a dyed in the wool Stones fan since the Fall of '72. Once I got hooked on them, it dug itself in really deeply. It's been that way ever since.

I was listening to a 1975 Stones concert this past weekend, and Billy Preston has a two song feature. Did Ollie Brown, the percussionist on the tour, play drums on the Preston tunes? It's definitely a different drummer playing, and the guy is terrific, and extremely funky. I came across a few concert photos from the tour showing Brown on drums.

Rolling Stones legend guests at In The City

Oct 7, 2008

Former Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham was on hand to host the second day of the In The City event in Manchester (October 6).

Now in its 17th year, the annual industry conference got underway with an artist managers panel.

Featuring the managers of bands like Kaiser Chiefs and The Courteeners, the panel looked at their involvement with such acts and the inside gossip of what it's like to manage a band.

Moderated by Loog Oldham, the panel discussed what it takes to be successful and how that is changing all the time with technology and the internet.

James Sandom, manager of Kaiser Chiefs and The Cribs, said: "The mystery of searching for bands to manage has gone thanks to MySpace."

Also talking about the ever emerging Chinese market and issues surrounding signing record deals, Loog Oldham brought his experiences of managing The Rolling Stones in the 1960s to contrast it to the modern role of a manager.

Other guests included Jon 'The Reverend' McClure and former Joy Division and New Order bassist Peter Hook, who were on a panel discussing celebrity against creativity.

Talking about the how the media can stifle creativity, McClure said in regards to his fame that "I feel like a sore thumb in a piranha pool."

Elsewhere, American record label legend Seymour Stein, who signed the likes of the Ramones and Talking Heads in the 1970s, discussed the history of independent record labels and the impact it had on them and their acts.

In The City continues today (October 7).

Rolling Stones' manager derides The Verve

Andrew Loog Oldham has derided The Verve over their use of a Rolling Stones sample in their 1997 classic 'Bitter Sweet Symphony'.

The legendary former manager of The Rolling Stones joked to Uncut that he has bought "a pretty presentable watch strap" with the royalties that he has earned from the song.

"They [Mick Jagger and Keith Richards] have the watch and I have a pretty presentable watch strap. That's my little piece," he told our sister title.

'Bitter Sweet Symphony' uses an Andrew Oldham Orchestra recording of 'The Last Time' for its orchestral hook, and was the subject of a legal challenge by The Rolling Stones shortly after its release.

Loog Oldham, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards have since received all of the royalty payments from the song, after it was successfully argued that although The Verve had negotiated to use a sample, they had used "too much".

"As for Richard Ashcroft, well, I don't know how an artist can be severely damaged by that experience. Songwriters have learned to call songs their children, and he thinks he wrote something. He didn't. I hope he's got over it. It takes a while," Loog Oldham added.

'Musical benches' to serenade public with Beatles, Stones and Dusty

Musical benches playing the songs of The Rolling Stones, Dusty Springfield and Queen are being erected across Britain.

The bizarre scheme has been to put in place as part of Nokia's new Comes With Music package, aiming to discover regional differences in musical tastes.

The company conducted a survey where people chose from a long list of popular songs - and a top ten for each city was calculated.

Perhaps surprisingly, the most popular song across the country was found to be Dusty Springfield's 'Son Of A Preacher Man', coming top in Birmingham, Bristol, Glasgow, London and Leeds.

Liverpool and Newcastle's favourite song was 'Paint It, Black' by The Rolling Stones and Manchester chose 'Bohemian Rhapsody' by Queen.

Now, the top ten from each city is being uploaded onto soundsystems built into the benches, which will be erected in each town.

The nationwide top ten was:

1. Dusty Springfield - 'Son Of A Preacher Man'
2. The Rolling Stones - 'Paint It, Black'
3. Queen - 'Bohemian Rhapsody'
4. The Beatles - 'Hey Jude'
5. Robbie Williams - 'Angels'
6. Frank Sinatra - 'My Way'
7. Michael Jackson - 'Thriller'
8. Whitney Houston - 'I Will Always Love You'
9. Aretha Franklin - 'Respect'
10. Elvis Presley - 'Suspicious Minds'

I had a scary thought just now. I really hope that when or if the Universal round of Stones remasters are released, they will not be priced to fleece like the Bob Dylan Tell-Tale Signs and Neil Young Archives Vol.1 titles. Please Universal, don't do that to us, o.k.?

Rolling Stones' Mick Jagger to produce movie with Martin Scorsese?

Nov 5, 2008

The Rolling Stones' Mick Jagger is set to produce a film with director Martin Scorsese, according to reports.

The singer is looking into buying the rights to various biographies which the pair could turn into a film, claims The Sun, although the paper did not reveal further details about the project or the source of the information.

Jagger worked with Scorsese when the director made a documentary film about two of The Rolling Stones' 2006 'A Bigger Bang' tour shows.

The resulting movie, 'Shine A Light', was released earlier this year and featured guest turns from Jack White, Christina Aguilera and Buddy Guy.

THE ROLLING STONES, BOWIE AND OASIS SET TO BECOME MUSEUM PIECES

A Mick Jagger jumpsuit from the 1970s, Noel Gallagher's Union Jack guitar and one of David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust outfits will be among the exhibits at the The British Music Experience when it opens in March 2009.

The new museum will open at the O2 in London, in a space which has previously housed the ancient treasures of Tutankhamun and, currently, the plasticised corpses of the Bodyworlds exhibition.

From March, the area will be permanently occupied by the sacred objects of British rock history - like Roger Daltrey's Woodstock outfit - and plenty of cutting-edge interactive attractions. Here, at last, we're promised you'll be able to watch instrument tuition videos from The Magic Numbers, no less.

The curators also reveal that there'll be guitars belonging to Marc Bolan, Paul Weller and Blur, an Amy Winehouse vintage dress, and yet more from the Dame's capacious wardrobe, including the clown suit he wore in the "Ashes To Ashes" video.

KEITH RICHARDS TO RELEASE ALBUM OF JAZZ STANDARDS?

Keith Richards may release an album of jazz standards, after his private covers of classic songs is leaked on the internet.

Over 20 versions of standards by the Rolling Stones guitarist, including Judy Garland's "Somewhere Over The Rainbow", have been released on the web, prompting Richards to suggest a release may be in the pipeline.

According to The Telegraph, the guitarist wrote on a fan forum: "I've never planned [a release] before, but maybe now I should; I'll think about it."

Some of the covers that have surfaced include Richards' versions of Jerry Lee Lewis' "She Still Comes Around", Fats Domino's "Blue Monday", Andy Williams' "Let It Be Me" and Tammy Wynette's "Apartment No 9".

I don't think it's far-fetched for Keith to do this. This is the kind of stuff where he can really put some feeling into it. That ol' voice, as scarred as it is, can still convey emotions better than a ton of proper singers can. That's legitimacy I can live with.

Lately I've been listening quite a bit to Patti Rothberg's awesome recent "Double Standards" cd, which includes a wonderful cover of the Stones Sway. While very close to the original, Patti's version is at least just as good. She adds a sense of joy the original is missing & I also prefer her arrangement without the strings, though her guitarist isn't Keith......

At any rate, that motivated me to put on Sticky Fingers. I get so much new music, I rarely have the chance to listen to old favorites. I was reminded how truly amazing Sticky Fingers is. Not only is there no filler, but the non hits (Sway, Bitch, Can't You Hear Me Knockin') are just as good as the hits! What an awesome cd.

Rolling Stones' hometown renames streets in their honour

A series of streets in Mick Jagger and Keith Richards' childhood town of Dartford, Kent, are to be named after Rolling Stones songs.

Councillors approved the names on Thursday (December 11), with chosen titles including Satisfaction Street, Angie Mews and Ruby Tuesday Drive, reports BBC News.

Other new names include Little Red Walk, Babylon Close, Stones Avenue, Dandelion Row, Lady Jane Walk, Cloud Close, Rainbow Close and Satisfaction Street.

Both Jagger and Richards were born in Dartford. Jagger, along with Brian Jones and pianist Ian Stewart, formed The Rolling Stones in 1962.

Police are apparently worried that fans will steal the street names as mementos.

Bob Dylan: 'The Rolling Stones need Bill Wyman back'

Bob Dylan has said he thinks The Rolling Stones aren't "real" enough without original bassist Bill Wyman in the band.

In an interview with MTV producer Bill Flanagan to promote his new album 'Together Through Life', Dylan said he regards The Rolling Stones as a mere "funk band" without Wyman on board.

The bassist quit the band in 1990, after nearly three decades service.

"I'm not saying they don't keep going, but they need Bill," he said. "Without him they're a funk band. They'll be the real Rolling Stones when they get Bill back."

Earlier in the interview, Dylan said he thinks The Rolling Stones are "pretty much finished," reports Bobdylan.com.

Flanagan then accused Dylan of being stuck in the '80s, before asking him if he really thinks The Rolling Stones are finished as a band.

"Of course not, they're far from finished," Dylan replied. "The Rolling Stones are truly the greatest rock and roll band in the world and always will be. The last too.

"Everything that came after them, metal, rap, punk, new wave, pop-rock, you name it...you can trace it all back to The Rolling Stones. They were the first and the last and no one's ever done it better."

So, I guess Dylan doesn't like Daryl Jones? Guess Bob smoked somethin' bad that day. Also, Wyman left the Stones in 1992, not 1990-in '90 he was still on tour with them and in '91 recorded the 2 new songs on "Flashpoint". Nice job NME-idiots.

Isn't it about time that Darryl Jones got promoted to an actual Rolling Stone instead of a hired sideman? Allow him to be featured on album covers and take bows with the rest of the band!
