[bigred]Appletree Theatre "Playback"[/bigred]



Anyone familiar with this will probably agree,although it was recorded a long time ago (1968) so might only be known to those around at the time,or devoted psych or sunshine pop fans.

Also supposedly one of John Lennon's favourites,which is understandable as many of the songs are so damn weird,but funny too.I did find myself laughing at "I Wonder if Louise is a Home" which includes the voices of a cornball accented actor paying a visit to "Louise" and having the door answered by a spaced- out hippy.

There must have been a couple of times when I raised an eye while listening,but for those who have heard this record will know it's one that's going to stay with you !!!

The music is also fab.

this is terence boylan! and his brother john (the producer).

i have been singing the praises of terence boylan for years,

he has three other albums:

>alias boona
>S/T
>suzy

the s/t and "suzy" are available from wounded bird and "alias boona" is a very expensive japanese import.


s/t and 'suzy" are california style rock and roll at it's finest, with all the session men of the time.

and "alias boona" has becker and fagan playing on every song.

This album is an underground psych lite/sunshine pop classic beloved by collectors of this kind of genre.
It's also rare as hell-the record was originally out on the Verve ( ) label but now only is only available from Terrence Boylan's own website.

It's been put out on a small label called Spinnaker Records which may also be Terrence's own label.
I can attest to the quality of the reissue-good sound and a excellent presentation of the original album cover and liner notes.All in all, excellent quality.

I don't normally buy off artists websites,but this was a must having known something of the album's reputation for years.The owner of a small vinyl store I occasionally frequent also mentioned it in conversation a while back as he knows I like this kind of stuff.

I will check the other stuff he did on S/T and Suzy, and Fagan and Becker as session men on the other.

you are correct, spinnaker records is terence boylan's label.

"alias boona" is very mellow, much in the singer-songwriter genre of the time.

s/t and "suzy" are full blown band projects, again, with the usual suspects. chevey chase (yep, that one) plays a nice piano on the song "miso soup" off of "suzy".

and if you really want to be a completist, boylan's greatest hits CD has three "new" songs unavailable anywhere else.

Got 'em, Renny. I've had the self-titled LP since the 80's, when I found it in a cut-out bin and took a chance on it. Nice record. Finally got "Suzy" when it came out on CD a little while back. I had already picked up his self-titled comp before either of the albums appeared on CD. I also have an old beat-up copy of "Alias Boona," but it's in such bad shape I only tried to listen to it once. I've read about Appletree Theater here and there, particularly in the most recent issue of "The Mojo Collection."

I'll report back to you and Master Hare once I listen to it.

Got my copy of Appletree Theater yesterday. I just blew through it, listening to the first minute or so of each track, but there's some very nice material on there. The strange stuff just sounds like typical experiments of the period -- given what the Beatles did around that time, it just sounds a little goofy to me, and typical of that period. I'll give another report when I have a chance to actually listen to everything.
