The part about "never hit the charts agin" makes this tougher if we take it literally. For example, Love's "7 and 7 Is" actually charted higher than "My Little Red Book" (#33 and #52, respectively), while "Alone Again Or" peaked at #99.
If we make it two Top 40 hits, it's a bit easier to come up with examples.
Strawberry Alarm Clock: "Incense and Peppermints" #1, "Tomorrow" #23 Strangeloves: "I Want Candy" #11, "Night Time" #30 Bobby Fuller Four: "I Fought the Law" #9, "Love's Made a Fool Of You" #26

Boyce & Hart - I Wonder What She's Doing Tonight & Let Us Vote (Does ANYONE have a copy of LUV? It was HUGE on the radio in Seattle, but I've never seen it on record or cd).

In my neighborhood, Boyce & Hart's other hit was "Alice Long (You're Still My Favorite Girlfriend)." And my personal fav was their theme to "Where Angels Go, Trouble Follows."

Those were both pretty big, though -- Sugar Sugar, the follow-up, was the top selling single of that year.
