Quiet at the moment. Earlier today heard a surprisingly compressed shm of Neil Young's harvest. I'm curious where they got the mastering for it, wonder if it's the US dvd-a? The detail was good, & for once it didn't sound muddy, but man the compression was extreme.

I'd forgotten how much of this material was remixed for the 2003 compilation.

Carole King is over in Britain at the moment to promote the Legacy edition of "Tapestry" and her latest dvd.

So what better opportunity to go back and listen to that classic ? I dug my old version out and gave it a listen after quite a few years.A classic in every sense of the world. You know when an album hits the right places when you get goosebumps, and this happened on the second song "So Far Away" and at other intervals throughout.

She's also appearing on a late night music show tonight Later With Jools Holland (pre-recorded), and checking the schedules is due to perform two songs from the album. It will also be her first performance on British tv for 38 years !

I also caught her on a chat show in which she revealed the famous cat on the cover of Tapestry was called
"Telemachus".

I'll also listen now to "Now That Everything's Been Said" that she recorded as one third of a group called The City, and before she hit the big time.Another lovely album.

I've been a big Carole King fan ever since the first time I heard "It's Too Late" on the radio back in, what, 1970? But I had never heard the City album until it came out on CD a few years ago. Excellent album, very much a piece with Writer, Tapestry, Music, etc. "Snow Queen" is one of her best songs.

The "Snow Queen" is a standout song for me too. There's also a nice cover version of it on "Roger Nicholls and The Small Circle Of Friends".

I'm short on Carole King, only those two albums mentioned above.

Which album/s would you recommend ?

Music is actually my favorite Carole King album. It's pretty great, a lot like Tapestry (it was the follow-up), but more consistent to my ears. Rhymes and Reasons, Writer, and Fantasy are very good. Writer is like a prelude to Tapestry; it's about half great. I can't recommend anything after Fantasy, except Really Rosie, which is pretty great for a kid's album.

Consort of Musicke by William Byrd and Orlando Gibbons - Glenn Gould

One of the most beautiful piano performances I know.

Thanks Greg,

Music has to go on my "to get list" sometime soon, especially as you consider the album to be more consistant than Tapestry !! I'm particularly interested to hear her version of The Carpenter's song "It' Going to Take Some Time" Funny really that everyone thinks that they wrote that song when in fact it was Carole-but then there must be loads of other examples of that happening.

Having just those two albums in my collection I mentioned above just isn't enough as there's a warm, mellow groove in Carole's piano and songwriting that I really appreciate, and that's perfect for the mood of the coming summer months.

I've been playing Semisonic's All About Chemistry in the car this morning. I never understood why this album didn't do better. It had some catchy, witty pop songs and (seemingly) radio-friendly ballads. And continuing with the Carole King theme, she co-wrote and appears on one of the tracks.

I traveled back in time to my favorite decade, the 1950's, and played my lovely Japanese CD of Elvis Presley's second album, "Elvis", the one with the Little Richard covers. I played it all day yesterday and felt kind of sad that it was all so long ago. I also wondered if kids today even know who Elvis is. I think we're at the point in time where Elvis Presley is not a household name any more. But then old folks have been complaining about the youth since the days of Socrates, so nothing new there.
