I'm really sorry to hear this. In a lot of ways, it was the Buzzcocks that showed me that there was a lot more to this punk thing than just the Clash, the Damned, the Pistols and the Ramones. And he still put on a ripping good show, the last time I saw them.
I am so broken of losing Pete Shelly. What a great, great songwriter. 'Singles Going Steady" might the most perfect pop record compilation of all-time.
I am full catalogue on this band and like Larry listen to them quite often. When they got back together in 1993 with 'Trade Test Transmissions ', 'All Set' in 1996 and 'Modern' in 1999 were all so killer. Unbelievable comeback, can't think of any other band getting back together and possibly exceeding the classic stuff released a decade previous. WOW!
I will be playing an extended tribute Saturday in honor of one of my favorite songwriters of all-time.
God Bless you Pete, you did so much for me during some tough times. Luv ya!
Geez, I saw Buzzcocks perform in 2005. Such a great band. I wrote a short film called "Promises" that used "Promises" over the opening and closing credits, but it doesn't appear to be online. As Paul McCartney said, it's a bummer.

Here are the opening numbers from the Pete Shelley tribute concert at London's Royal Albert Hall this past June. Steve Diggle sings both of these Shelley compositions. Diggle also invited a lot of guest vocalists, both contemporaries and friends from later generations of musicians, to join him for the rest of the concert.
And I'm so happy that Diggle will be continuing The Buzzcocks, not just to keep the music alive (as has become a cliche), but with new material.
Steve Diggle wrote:
After [the tribute concert] I’m gonna write a new single. To mark a new era of Buzzcocks. Cause, as you know, the first single was recorded with Howard Devoto. Then Pete Shelley and then I’d be my era of Buzzcocks now. I’ll just continue the journey. In the last year when we were on the road he [Pete] kind of said to me that he’s ready to retire and I’d carry on with his blessing. I said to Pete: “I’ll do it. But I’ll stay with me!” ( laughs ). He was coming to the corner - he might retire anyway. However, Pete gave me his blessing, fans gave me their blessing. They said: “Please, carry on stage!” So I’ll keep these songs alive. Keep the songs alive and Pete’s memory alive. And me alive – I’m still here ( laughs ). People say: “It won’t be the same!” – of course it won’t be the same! Every day is different! You wake up in the morning and it would be different than yesterday. You just carry on with it.
