I'm trying to find a version of Going Down that I used to hear it on FM radio in the 70's. Just picked up JJ Cale's Really, hoping this was the version, but it's not. It's also not Freddie King's version, although I could have sworn it was on Shelter Records.
Allmusic.com isn't helping me much. Any idea which version got airplay?

The only version I'm aware of is the one by Jeff Beck Group.

"...going down. Down, down, down, down, down." ?

Or Joe Simon's "Drowining in The Sea of Love" --- "...going down one time...." ?

The former.
It's definitly the song that JJ Cale recored, which I see was written by The Monkees.

I was going to say, I knew the Monkees had used that title, anyway...and the OOP "Two's Missing" compliation includes a vintage live cover version by the Who which may or may not resemble the Monkees' version.

I don't remember any of the performances I've ever heard as being much else than an apparent excuse to repeatedly exclaim a racy-for-forty-years-ago double entendre.

On You Tube there's a video of JJ Cale and Leon Russell doing Going Down (from 2007, it says). If that's the song you're thinking of, Don Nix wrote it and Jeff Beck did it on the Jeff Beck Group album (the one with the orange on the cover) in 1972 or 1973. I've never spent a lot of time with JJ Cale's music (I know, I know . . .) but now will have to dig a little deeper.

Jeff Beck had the best known version, but I also like Nix's original.

It is Jeff Beck. Went back to Amazon and sampled the track AFTER Going Down. They have the sequencing wrong on the audio clips. Thanks guys.
