In 1991, Guns n' Roses released their second album, the sprawling, two-release Use Your Illusion.

In 1991, Nirvana released their second album, the generation-defining hit Nevermind.

Within a few short years, both bands would crash and burn and ex-members would go on to successful post-band projects.

Guns n' Roses. Nirvana. Choose.

Nirvana. They have at least three good albums and defined a musical generation. Even kids today revere the band. GNR had the one terrific album, then a mediocre dual album and little else.

Guns 'n Roses. Whatever else you want to say about them, those guys could flat-out play. As excessive as the "Use Your Illusion" albums are, I've always admired them more than "Appetite For Destruction", which was a little bit too much of a metalhead crowd-pleaser for me. Nirvana annoyed me because they tried to position themselves as the antidote to commercialized music, yet the mass appeal of their music hinged on guitar hooks that were decidedly non-"alternative". Then Cobain blew his head off and his lyrics bcame tragic instead of whiny.

That first Guns album is still absolutely terrific. It's raw and blistering and uncompromising and just plain good. Though the Use Your Illusions were rather bloated, they can be distilled down to a pretty damn good record.

I still go with Nirvana, though, for the full scope of their career. Not only can their impact not be ignored, but they had some damn fine tunes. Appetite For Destruction is better than any individual Nirvana album, but taken as a whole I think Nirvana has the better catalog.

But it's close.

Nirvana, without a doubt. One of my favorite bands of all time. This requires less thought than any of your polls so far Taft. :)

I only know "Sweet Child of Mine" by GNR, but I think Nirvana is the best rock band since The Clash, so they get my vote.

An easy one to make up for Costello/Heads?
It's Nirvana for me.

Nirvana all the way. They made better records and had more impact.

A typo snuck into the title in my last post, anyway I should clarify I'm not casting my vote based on my knowledge of only that one GNR song, I'm familiar with their sound from various music programs on TV and based on that, for me there's no contest - Nirvana.

Nirvana is one of the most overrated bands in rock history.

Replace Nirvana with Aerosmith, and I agree with Chris.
