Today would have been Maynard Ferguson's 80th birthday. He was my hero as a trumpet player, a musician, and a person. It's been almost two years since he passed away, and it's still hard to believe he's gone because of his larger-than-life personality and playing style. I knew it would be weird thinking about him today and staying positive, and now I've learned that my 100-year-old grandmother just died. Maybe MF will play a concert for her once she gets settled. I hope she brings some earplugs! (I'd bet he's still pretty loud.)

So sorry to hear about your grandmother Jim. My sympathies to you and your family.

This is from about the time period I last saw him. He started this tune by throwing a handkerchief in the air, when it hit the ground the band just took off. He was always a blast to see.

And one more just because.

I played this arrangement of Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me in high school. My best friend was the lead trumpet. There was a tape made. It was ugly. It was brought out often at parties. Even now, 30+ years later we can laugh until we cry about that performance.

Thanks for the kind words & video, Federico. "Give It One" at breakneck speed is incredible to watch!

Condolences, Jim.

"Gospel John" has always been my favorite MF tune. (The Chameleon album was really popular among my high school bandmates in the late 70s.)

Is that Maynard's British band (with Randy Jones on drums) in the top video?

I am pretty sure that's Peter Erskine on drums.

This is for Jon:

You're right - it is Erskine. I never thought it possible he could look hairier.

I would put the "Give It One" video at around 1978, if I had to guess. I think Erskine was with MF from '76-'78.
