Bob Dylan. I really dislike Neil Young's music, despite my huge respect for him.

Both men are in my "admire more than actually listen to" column, but I at least get a hankering to hear some Dylan every few months, so he gets my vote.

Neil. He rocks harder, when he's in the mood.

Neil. I like 60's & early-mid 70's Dylan, I love N.Y. 70's & selected later period.

I go with Young over Dylan. I love a lot of Bob's work -- Freewheelin' and Blood On The Tracks are two of my favorite records -- but Young's work is more varied, more daring, remains more vital, and just plain rocks.
Plus I'd much rather hang out and have beers with Neil Young.

I think Bob Dylan's greatest songs are better than Neil Young's greatest songs, but Neil has persevered and his work has been more varied over the years, so, for his highly consistent and melodic body of work, I prefer Neil Young.

I agree with the: No.
I disagree about the 'more varied over the years'...both have done acoustic, electric, country, blues, solo, band...ect...certainly no grunge for Dylan, at least on record..

From what I've read about him, Bob Dylan succeeded by being manipulative, calculated, and dishonest to a large degree. He always seemed to be playing a game with everybody. Of couse, he's also brilliant, and his contributions to popular music are huge. Neil Young can't match them. Dylan blazed too many trails. His footprint is huge.
On the other hand, Neil Young has been mysterious and evasive, but always true to himself. Not nearly as pretentious as Dylan, and not as much attitude. He pours his heart out. I'm not so sure Dylan has a heart. Maybe that's why Neil's music hits a little deeper for me.

Last night Classic VH1 played Scorsese's Dylan documentary from a couple years back. It covers Dylan's early period, 1961-1966. It's amazing how quickly Dylan goes from a laughing, smiling, joking performer to a closed, hardened, angry guy. Everybody calls him the voice of the generation and asks him to explain what young people want. In the interviews done recently Dylan still seems genuinely befuddled: "How do you respond to something like that?" He pretty clearly responded by putting up a wall around him and looking out for number one.
