Alex Turner of Arctic Monkeys has the best new voice in rock. Period. Excellent British accent, a wee bit of attitude, yet a slacky, laid back delivery that seems at odds with his cynical working-class sneer. But it isn't. It's a total mix of charismatic contradictions, uncaring passion and intense boredom, and for that he's the best new vocalist I've heard this decade.

Honorable mention: Win Butler of Arcade Fire. A smug f***, but I like the sound of his voice.

Eilen Jewell

She has a couple of albums out. I saw her a couple of times last year and hope to again this summer at the Green River Festival in Greenfield, Massachusetts, where Lucinda Wiliams is the headliner. She's great live. Check her out: http://www.eilenjewell.com/ (By the way, it's pronounced EE-lynn.)
