Sigh. Congrats Philly, you were the better team. Umberger be damned.
It's funny, at the beginning of the season (true story) I expected the Flyers to be near the top of the East because of Biron, Briere, Jason Smith, etc. I also don't think they were as bad last year as their record. As the season went on I was pleased to see I was "wrong" especially when Montreal dominated them in at least two of the four games the Habs won. In the playoffs I expected a much better performance from my team and didn't get it. Philly made the most of their breaks, out-hustled, out-hit, won the little battles. Gah!!! This series could have easily been four straight.
Sigh. Always next year.
P.S. - The good thing is that this team is about one year ahead of Gainey's plan. Let's see what next year brings.
Hey, Montreal is a good team with a good future. As for the Flyers, this is truly amazing. The Flyers are just simply kicking ass and playing tough, and, as a team. Owner Ed snider and GM Paul Holmgren both knew last year's travesty had to be fixed and they made a series of excellent trades late last year and signings in the off-season that have been fantastic-Briere, Biron, Hartnell, Upshall, Smith, Timonen (who's been awesome), Thoreson (who was stolen off waivers from Edmonton this year, adding to the incredible young talent like Richards, Umberger, Carter, Kukkonen, etc.
Still, they were the worst team by far in the league last year and this has been remarkable.
Hopefully the Rangers can extend the series with Pittsburgh a little longer and make that go as long as it can.
If we face the Penguins, it will be tough as hell, but we beat them many times this year, so we shall see.
