just opened my new copy of van morrison's "keep it simple" and lo and behold the security tag is on the blue paper inlay card.

and sure as i'm sittin here when i tried to remove it the paper started to tear.

needless to say i will be bringing this back to best buy for another copy. and if that one has the tag in the same place i will burn the CD (which, by the way i have never done) and bring it back and ask for my money back.

this is fucking ridiculous. why would they do that?

renny the pissed

Even when the security tag is on the plastic it's a pain in the ass to remove it.I've broken jewel cases trying to get to the tag and if if do manage to get the tag off then I have to clean the gunk left behind from the tag.Now I just say the hell with it and I leave the security tags on.

I absolutely HATE when they do that. It happens with DVDs all the time.

I have gotten a few cd's from CD Universe with the security tag on the inlay card as well. Are they worried about employee theft? I doubt a lot of Tears For Fears cd's get stolen from anywhere.

Are you blaming CD Universe for this? Because it's UMG that's doing it.

And speaking of TFF, same thing happened to my copy of Everybody Loves A Happy Ending.

I'm not blaming anyone I just thought it was odd that they were tagged even for mail orders. And it wasn't just UMG discs it was a couple of different companies including 2.13.61.

I, too, hate this practice. Also putting marketing labels directly on the jewel box instead of the cellophane. I bought it already, ferpetesake, stop selling it to me!

And I know this has been mentioned in other threads, but I also hate the practice of putting the price sticker over any packaging sticker on the shrinkwrap.

Fortunately I can only recall having bought two CDs with the security tag on the back insert. One came off with no ill effects, thanks to some careful peeling. The other I ended up taking back to Borders for an exchange.

Only in America! Remember longboxes? I loved when longboxes were being phased out, but were still being used. So you would open the cellophane on the longbox, open the flap of the longbox, and there's your CD SHRINKWRAPPED!

Another pet peeve is when used CD stores put price stickers on digipacks that are almost impossible to remove without pulling off part of the cover.

sent this email to lost highwway:

I purchased the new Van Morrison Cd "Keep It Simple" last week and when I opened the CD I was amazed to see the security tag affixed to the blue paper under the CD tray.

When I tried to remove the tag from the paper, the paper tore and it now looks like crap.

I wanted you to know that is happening as I can't believe this was meant to be this way. Terrible product management.

I want you to know that I will be returning the CD to Best Buy to get another one, and if that one has the tag in the same place I will ask for a refund and not buy the CD again. I will wait until I find a used copy that doesn't have the tag on the paper.

I am not trying at all to be rude here, it is just that I very much value my CD collection and this is totally unacceptable.

Very sincerely yours,

Renny

got this reply:

Ack! Renny…. This should NOT happen. Thank you for taking the time to email and let us know of this flaw.

We pride ourselves in releasing not only quality products but also on quality formats – stickers should be the last of our problem and we will do everything to make sure that this does not happen again.

What is your address? I am more than happy to send you a copy, approved and check by me, that is in top condition so that you can add Keep It Simple to your collection sooner than later.

Thank you again for taking the time to notify us of this issue –

Best,

Skye

chalk one up for the good guys, and be sure to patronize lost highway records.

That's a great PR move (he doesn't know about it, but by your posting it here you've likely brought them some more business) and just an all around decent thing to do.

I guess you don't have to burn the CD now. But I was a little curious about what that would look like.

Good for you, Renny! I wish Universal had handled my complaint about the same thing w/the new Marilyn Manson CD the same way. I couldn't find an e-mail address, so I sent a fairly terse (but polite) letter asking for a new copy of the inlay. Never got so much as an acknowledgement.

lost highway is a lot smaller than universal, and, after reading your post, a lot more customer oriented.
