If you like THE BEATLES, you should investigate JOHN LENNON, PAUL MCCARTNEY, GEORGE HARRISON, and RINGO STARR albums.

Generally speaking, it's probably a safe bet that if you like [insert band name here], you should investigate [insert names of members of said band with solo works here].

Though this raises an interesting question...what former band members have gone on to release solo works that are so different in style from their original band that fans of one aren't particularly likely to enjoy the other? (Anyone with some good answers can feel free to start another thread.)

Fans of The Box Tops will not find much to relate to in Alex Chilton's later work.

Fans of the more punkish/power-pop aspects of the Go-Gos' work (like me) will dislike much of Belinda Carlisle's solo career.

Those who liked Bourgeois-Tagg will actively hate Brent Bourgeois's solo Christian Rock albums.

Going in the other direction, most Kenny Loggins fans won't have the slightest idea what to make of The Electric Prunes.

(From the other thread before I realized there was this thread)

The Band and Robbie Robertson's solo work are pretty different.

David Bowie and Tin machine were like oil and water. Alexander Skip Spence's "Oar" is a radical departure from Moby Grape. Scott Walker's later solo work is about as far removed from The Walker Brothers as you can get.

although never appearing on an album of theirs as far as i know, jackson browne was originally affiliated with the nitty gritty dirt band.

david lindley, jackson browne's buddy and steel guitar player, was originally in the psychedelic band kaleidescope.

stephen stills and richie furay were both in the au-go-go-singers before buffalo springfield.

i'll think of more i'm sure.

I think that Peter Gabriel's proto-new-wave solo material bears little resemblance to the prog-rock extravaganzas of early Genesis.

Renny,

I think I saw a Mynah Birds bootleg CD back when I was living in Tokyo. It was definitely pre-Springfield, just not sure if it was The Mynah Birds.

He was a member briefly in 1968. He played on one tour, but I don't think he recorded with them.

In a similar vein, Seals & Crofts were both members of The Champs, but I've seen conflicting reports as to whether they played on Tequila or not.

Their single is on one of the Complete Motown Single collections.

Jimmy Hart (professional wrestling manager) sang with the Gentrys'. They had the 60's hit Keep on Dancing.

Dr. Dre was in a glam R&B band. He got picked on mercilessly by rival rappers after pictures surfaced.

David Johansen's alter ego, Buster Poindexter, sounds nothing like the NY Dolls nor his regular solo albums.

Andy Partridge's new collaboration with Barry Andrews, called Monstrance, is unrecognizable as coming from two founding members of XTC.

Lindley solo is just about as different as Lindley with Jackson Browne!

Personally I think Young Americans & Let's Dance were both bigger departures then Tin Machine.

I'd throw Black Tie White Noise into that group as well, although BTWN could have been called Young Americans 2: Electric Boogaloo.

The Fireman was in a band called Wings. His music sounds nothing like that of his former band's. :-)
