With respects to Jimbo, I would appreciate the board's ideas on inspirational songs for a mix I am making for a friend's uncle, who is quite ill. Here are a few ideas so far:

Don't Give Up-Peter Gabriel
I Won't Back Down-Tom Petty
Countin' On A Miracle-Bruce Springsteen
Don't Dream It's Over-Crowded House
Everybody Hurts-R.E.M.
Running On Faith-Eric Clapton
Take My Hand-Los Lobos

Thanks in advance.

If he's a spiritual man,

Dylan's "Every Grain Of Sand"
or "When He Returns"
"Presence of the Lord"-Blind Faith
"In The Skies"-Peter Green
Harrison's "All Things Must Pass"
Bach-Sheep May Safely Graze

If not, try "Up Where We Belong"-to me, it's more than just a love song.
Patti Smith-"Till Victory"

Earl, not all of these were selected for directly-related subject matter lyrics (although some were); some of the songs are chosen just because of the feeling i think the music itself would likely generate, the hope-healing-inspiration thang.

What A Day - Poco
Good Morning - Steve Miller Band
I Love You - Steve Miller Band
Tokin's - Steve Miller Band
Love Is the Answer - Todd Rundgren
A Good Feelin' To Know - Poco
God Only Knows - the Beach Boys
Awaiting On You All - George Harrison
Sweeter Memories - Todd Rundgren
Sweet Lovin' - Poco
Take It All - Badfinger
Know One Knows - Badfinger
Love and Mercy - Brian Wilson
Keep On Tryin' - Poco
Sagebrush Serenade - Poco
Lovin' Arms - Poco
If Not For You - George Harrison
Keep On Believin' - Poco
Here Comes the Sun - Beatles
Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth) - George Harrison
This Whole World - the Beach Boys
Add Some Music To Your Day - the Beach Boys
Long Promised Road - the Beach Boys
Hold On Dear Brother - the Beach Boys
Believe In Me - Todd Rundgren
A Long Time, A Long Way To Go - Todd Rundgren
I Saw the Light - Todd Rundgren
The Rain, the Park, and Other Things - the Cowsills
We Can Fly - the Cowsills

i know there are many more which just aren't coming to mind, but hope some of these might work for you.

If he's a person of faith, I would recommend "No Footprints" by Bruce Cockburn. When my dad died I listed to a lot of Bruce Cockburn. In fact, that summer I constantly listened to Cockburn's Strange Waters, which is about the crazy directions life takes you--and has a wonderful blistering guitar solo. I always felt like he would approve of musicianship like that :)

I apologize for this digression, but this thread has me thinking about my father, who was born in the 30's and listened to Neil Diamond, Kris Kristofferson, and John Prine when I was growing up. When I was in college I introduced him to Dark Side of the Moon, and I still smile every time I think about him telling me, "That Pink Floyd...he's a genious."

Best wishes to your friend and his uncle.

If he's a religous person, then I would suggest the following:

I Believe In You - The Blind Boys of Alabama / Bob Dylan
Look Where He Brought Me From - The Blind Boys of Alabama
Sometimes By Step - Rich Mullins
Awesome God - Rich Mullins
Rise Above It All - The Canton Spirituals

If not,.then perhaps...

Riviera Paradise - Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble
I Believe I Can Fly - R Kelly
I Still Believe - The Call
