Hey, I LOVE Steely Dan. This is the first I've seen the thread. For me, it started with hearing Do It Again on the radio (probably the way it started for a lot of us who were alive at the time). What a killer tune. It sounded like nothing else on the radio; it had a sophistication and intelligence, but also a darkness, that most top-40 tunes didn't have. I bought the 45. Then, Reeling In The Years showed up. Another killer tune. What was up with these guys? What an incredible 1-2 punch from a brand new band. Got the album (actually a cassette tape). Got the next one when it came out, even though there was no hit. And the next, Pretzel Logic, which had another great top-40 hit (Rikki Don't Lose That Number). I didn't know anybody else at the time who liked them. They were like my little secret. So cool. So dark. So twisted. But so undeniably GOOD. I saw that even though I was just in high school. Fagen and Becker are geniuses.

I love 'em-just not listening to them much lately. One of the all-time original artists ever.

I wish they'd release another live DVD. The last one was seven years ago. If they had one from the Everything Must Go tour, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. The best of the four tours I've seen them on.

For a newcomer, start with one of the compilations and then move on to:

Katy Lied
The Royal Scam
Aja

Chris (the IMWAN one, not Karam) -- I think you'll find plenty of us who love the Dan. We just don't post every five seconds down here like you folks do upstairs.

 That introduction is easily one of the funniest things I've got in my CD collection! The image in my mind is of an impaired Cab Calloway introducing "Mr. Dan" a few years before he did the same honors for the Blues Brothers in a much classier (though less amusing) manner.

Steely Dan is one of my favorites as well. Back on the AOL Boards around 2000, some posters were debating whether some of the lyrics from Two Against Nature were subversive or not. One guy suggested this motto for Steely Dan: "Sinister Until Proven Otherwise!"

Was just listening to "Green Earrings". If you ever want to define for someone what is meant when a drummer is "in the pocket" just play this. I think it's Bernard Purdie, who is of course one of the great "in the pocket" cats of all time - along with Jabo Starks, David Garibaldi, Jeff Porcaro, Harvey Mason, Dennis Chambers ...

Count me as another Steely Dan fan, they're one of my all time favorites too. The CD albums that I own are:
"Can't Buy A Thrill"
"Countdown To Ecstasy"
"Pretzel Logic"
"Royal Scam"
"Katy Lied"
"Aja"
"Gaucho"
"Two Against Nature"
"The Old Regime"
"Stone Piano"
"Sun Mountain"

Thanks for posting the video links, Chris. It was nice to listen to those songs again, when I really needed it. 8-)

I'm a big fan. One of the few bands who can regularly make me laugh.

Haven't played them for a long time, but I especially like Can't Buy A Thrill & Pretzel Logic. Elliot Randall's guitar solo on Reelin' In The years has got to be one of the top 10 solos in r&r ever (uh, oh, I feel a new list thread coming on), & I love their take on Ellington's East St Louis Toodle-oo.
