OK, for all you compulsive list makers out there, here's my challenge.

The rules: Let's say that for the rest of your life, the only music you can listen to is what you choose for this list -- the classic desert island scenario.

You can choose any 50 albums you want. All will be specially prepared and presented in pristine form in the format of your choice, so the quality of the media is not in question (although the quality of the original recording may be a consideration). This is about the music.

No compilations, please. No best-ofs or greatest hits. Double and triple albums are OK, even box sets, if that's how the material was originally released (e.g., Keith Jarrett's Sun Bear concerts, George Harrison's All Things Must Pass), but no box set compilations, UNLESS the box set was all previously unreleased material. Remastered albums with extra tracks are fine.

In addition to the 50 albums, you may choose 50 random tracks, also in your format of choice. This makes it unnecessary to put an album on your list just because there's one song you absolutely have to have, and allows you to include singles. It also allows you to previously unreleased tracks from compilations. The tracks can be any length. If you want to include an entire side of an LP because it has no visible division between individual songs, be my guest.

So, 50 albums, plus 50 individual cuts. If you're in, take your time and get it right.

50 is a lot more realistic and reasonable than the usual 10 in these DID lists. I'm going to take my time and get back to you. I'd want the singles compiled on CD, though, 45's wear out - even on desert islands.

That's why I thought it would be interesting to do a really big list this time. Imagine the singles (or single album tracks) are in any format that makes you happy. Format is no object.

Thanks, Googa. Wow. A smattering of recordings from the 70's, and nothing newer, unless I'm missing something.

My favorite pick: "Suavecito" by Malo. Love that song. Actually, I probably like the b-side ("Nena") even better. The're both in the running for my singles list.

As I work on my list, I'm surprised how much of it is from the 60's and 70's. I like (and buy) a lot of current stuff, but when it comes down to what's essential to me, it's mostly from that era.

I'm also surprised at how much great music I'm going to have to leave off.

My list is coming soon.

Nice lists, Greg. You do like your singer-songwriters, don't you? There is one track from the 80's ((Hey You) the Rocksteady Crew) and one from the '90s (Return of the Mack) on my list.

I like a lot of stuff, but it's the singer/songwriter/CSNY type stuff that really gets me the most, I guess.

I have to admit there's a lot of stuff on your list that I've never heard of. I'm having a good time looking stuff up. Found a video on YouTube of some god-awful 70's disco band doing "Apache," complete with scantily-clad dancing girls in fake Native-American garb. Have you seen that? If that song means anything to you, maybe you shouldn't.

Yes, I watched that video on a TV show, apparently it's got a cult following all over the world. I think it's a riot. But I wouldn't want to own the music! :ohno:

I hope to tackle the album part as soon as I have a couple spare hours. The singles will be harder; I don't have any database of every song I own!

OK, here it goes...........

I couldn’t get it down to 50, so here’s my top 60.. Before I edited my list, the original list had 125 albums. If I was really doing MY personal D.I. list, there would be lots of box sets & best of’s, but I mostly followed the rules. I did go with a few “2fer” reissues, & early Duke Ellington was only on compilations (pre-LP days), so I chose the 24 cd RCA box set. This is really hard for me to do without best of’s & box sets… GRR. It would also be different tomorrow.

Top 60 Albums

1. Blue Oyster Cult Secret Treaties
2. Bruce Cockburn Circles In The Stream
3. Bruce Cockburn In The Falling Dark
4. Byrds Untitled/Unissued
5. Country Joe & The Fish Electric Music For The Mind & Body
6. Crosby,Stills & Nash (1st s/t)
7. CSNY 4 Way Street (2 Cd's)
8. CSNY Deja Vu
9. Dan Fogelberg Captured Angel
10. Dan Fogelberg Home Free/Souvineers UK 2fer
11. Dan Fogelberg Netherlands
12. Dan Reed Network 1st
13. Dave Mason Is Alive
14. David Bowie Ziggy Soundtrack 30th Anniversary Limited Ed (2 cd)
15. David Bowie David Live ( Expanded 2 Cd's )
16. David Bowie Ziggy Stardust (30th expanded 2 cd)
17. David Crosby If I Could Only Remember My Name (CD DVD Remaster)
18. Deep Purple Made In Japan (2cd)
19. Duke Ellington Centenial Collection (RCA 24 CD Box)
20. Duncan Browne Wild Places / Streets Of Fire 2 fer
21. Eric Andersen Blue River
22. Fish Vigil In A Wilderness Of Mirrors
23. Grateful Dead Reckoning (expanded 2 cd)
24. Grateful Dead Live (Skull & Roses)
25. Guess Who Live At The Paramount
26. Ian Tamblyn When Will I See You
27. Jackson Browne Late For The Sky
28. Jackson Browne The Pretender
29. James Gang Live In Concert
30. Janis Joplin In Concert
31. Jefferson Airplane Volunteers (expanded
32. Jefferson Airplane After Bathing At Baxter's (Expanded Remaster)
33. Jimi Hendrix Are You Experienced (Expanded)
34. Joni Mitchell Blue
35. Joni Mitchell Court & Spark
36. Joni Mitchell For The Roses
37. Lisa Loeb Firecracker (Japan with 2 bonus)
38. Lisa Loeb The Way It Really Is (Japan bonus track)
39. Lou Reed Rock 'N' Roll Animal (Expanded Remaster)
40. Maria McKee Life Is Sweet
41. Marillion Clutching At Straws (2 CD)
42. Mott The Hoople All The Young Dudes
43. Mott The Hoople Mott
44. Neil Young Live At Massey Hall
45. Paula Cole This Fire
46. Ralph McTell Ralph, Albert & Sydney (Live)
47. Richard & Linda Thompson Pour Down Like Silver (Expanded UK)
48. Sarah Masen Carry Us Through
49. Sarah Masen Self Titled
50. Sarah McLachlan Solace
51. Sarah McLachlan Fumbling Towards Ecstacy
52. Shari Ulrich Long Nights
53. Shawn Colvin A Few Small Repairs
54. Spirit Live At The Rainbow 1978
55. The Tubes 1st/Young & Rich (UK 2fer)
56. Tori Amos Little Earthquakes
57. Traffic Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys
58. Wendy Waldman The Main Refrain
59. Wishbone Ash 1st
60. Wishbone Ash Argus Deluxe (2 cd UK)

I just did a count, I'm a bit surprised but if box sets were allowed I'd only be adding 10 & pulling about 15 single cd's.

A few observations:

1. I made the rules, but I can't enforce them. If you break them, or bend them, you break them or bend them. Consider the rules to be as starting point. Have fun, for god's sake.
2. The album lists are really interesting, but I'm finding the single track lists even more interesting. That's where you get down those odd songs that really hit a sweet spot.
3. Even though it's 50 albums, it takes a lot of pruning if you're a serious collector. The last few cuts I made were very painful. I wanted Tommy Keene (#51) to make the cut so badly. You deserve it, Tommy.
4. I don't have any database -- albums or singles. You just have to dig in and do the work, knowing you'll probably forget SOMETHING.
5. I just saw the Cowboy Junkies tonight, and they were fantastic. How could I possibly leave them off my list entirely? How could I ever look Margo Timmins in the eye and tell her that? HOW? They deserve it, too

So here we go.The avatar-less beast known only to a select few returns to make another post
Here are my choices whittled down to a bare 50 and not given too much thought. Please note I have been extremely judicious in limiting each of my choices to only one album by a given artist. This was difficult with personal favourites like The Beatles and the great, great,Jefferson Airplane. If I could never listen to this lot again I would be severely tempted to pour burning hot oil into my ears.
