I've been complaining about the no solo artists in the decade best of's,....... so here goes!

While rules don't matter, 'cause this is about what you like; I'm suggesting splitting this into up to 10 rock & 10 singer/songwriter rather then US vs UK. I'd originally planned to do 5, but since there's no decade split, I couldn't keep either list that small. I actually had a lot of trouble keeping them to 10; I had some serious runner ups: Janis Joplin, Elvis Costello, Janis Ian, Joan Armatrading, Frank Zappa, Sheryl Crow, Suzanne Vega, Prince, Wendy Waldman, Paula Cole & Jann Arden to name a few. Crosby, Stills & Young could have gone in either list for me, but I had more room in the rock list! I put Jimi Hendrix in the 60's group list, otherwise I would have included him here.

Here's my lists, in no particular order:

Singer-Songwriter
1. Bruce Cockburn
2. Jackson Browne
3. Dan Fogelberg
4. Lisa Loeb
5. Sarah McLachlan
6. Tori Amos
7. Shawn Colvin
8. Sarah Masen
9. Iain Matthews
10. Richard & Linda Thompson (ok, so they're a duo..)

Rock Solo Artists
1. David Bowie
2. David Crosby
3. Maria McKee
4. Alanis Morissette
5. Lou Reed
6. Ian Hunter
7. Stephen Stills
8. Neil Young
9. Joe Jackson
10. Fish

Just going to lump a bunch of solo artists who top my personal best list. Even if McCartney, Lennon, and Elton John should be on any such "best of" lists, they aren't musicians I listen to, so I'll skip them. I'm sure they'll get more than their share from others. :)

Morrissey
Elvis Presley
Johnny Cash
Chuck Berry
David Bowie
Iggy Pop
Julian Cope
Patti Smith
Madonna
Prince
Bjork
Marc Bolan
Sinead O'Connor
Alison Moyet

I didn't include the '50s cats because they would be rock'n'roll and the OP specified "rock".

And I included them because I saw Elvis in your list. :) I understand the distinction (and why he's still a valid choice) now that you've brought it up though.

I would agree with all the choices made for the singer-songwriters, but still no mention for Jim Croce,Harry Chapin or Townes Van Zandt.

I'm going to include the 50's guys. The distinction between rock and rock n' roll is certainly a valid one, but I'm going to ignore it for these purposes. Geff also said rules don't matter,so:

rock solo

Chuck Berry
Bo Diddley
Little Richard
Buddy Holly
Bob Dylan
Paul McCartney
Van Morrison
Neil Young
Richard Thompson
Patti Smith

singer/songwriter

Joni Mitchell
Carole King
Donovan
Leonard Cohen
Neil Diamond
Phil Ochs

I didn't intend any distinction between "Rock" & Rock & Roll". 50's artists are equally valid if that's what you like!

Since I often find the distinctions between singer-songwriters and solo artists too blurry to matter, I'll keep things simple by combining them (alphabetically) on to a list of 20:

1. Joan Baez
2. James Brown
3. Chuck Berry
4. Johnny Cash
5. Ray Charles
6. Sam Cooke
7. Bob Dylan
8. Aretha Franklin
9. Marvin Gaye
10. Buddy Holly
11. Carole King
12. Little Richard
13. Van Morrison
14. Prince
15. Elvis Presley
16. Otis Redding
17. Paul Simon
18. Tom Waits
19. Neil Young
20. Frank Zappa

In that case I'll revise my rock list:

Elvis Presley
Jimi Hendrix
David Bowie
Brian Wilson
Paul McCartney
George Harrison
Chuck Berry
Buddy Holly
Little Richard
Dick Dale
