But "Welcome" is like a cousin of "Caravanserai".

When I started out I thought I'd only buy one comp from each artist and NO albums!

Now see, if I'd heard any live Santana albums, I'd probably have to change my answer. There was a live cut on Viva Santana!, "Super Boogie/Hong Kong Blues," that was unbelievable!

Well, growing up in the late 70's, early 80's changes my perspective, but here would be mine:
Santana Abraxas Moonflower Inner Secrets Shango
I'll say it again and again-why can't Sony/Legacy finish the damn Santana catalogue? Why???? We're talking gold and platinum albums here into the early 80's! Agggghhhhhhhh!

Santana is one of those groups where a good comp gives all their major work.
For me its a comp kind of group.

all are from the '70s I bought those albums a couple of years ago and have no regrets. I recently found a used copy of Borboletta, which is also good. I heard "Promise Of The Fisherman" a few months back on XM and thanks to Miss Linda, she pointed me in the direction of this album.

Santana's work in the '60s and '70s is all pretty essential. I've said this before, but this guy really needs to collect some old shows from back then and release them. He's worthy of some type of official bootleg series.

"Shango" is the best Santana album of the past 25 years. My first Santana concert was on the Shango tour in '83. They opened with the Top 40 hit "Hold on", but I had to stop for water because I had a slight headache, so I missed "Hold on" live and they haven't played it on any of the tours that I've seen since then, and I've seen them 9 or 10 times. Anyway, from '83 to '85 I played that album to death and have only revisited it a few times since then, but I think it holds up as a masterclass in AOR. Rolling Stone called it "as limp as a wet haddock" - I was outraged! I think "Shango" and Santana's legacy will live on for generations. Invisible Pedestrian, have you tried "The Essential Santana" - it's approved by the Hoffmanites - I think "Hold on" might be on there.

I think it's a bit of a cheat to include live albums here, since they function as greatest-hits compilations, not really comparable to individual studio albums. But as long as so many of you are including Moonflower, I think Lotus blows it out of the water. Really, I was tempted to call just Lotus two albums and then leave off Caravanserai. Not that the last is a bad album, but I just don't have near the attachment to it that I do to the other four listed.

Invisible Pedestrian, have you tried "The Essential Santana" - it's approved by the Hoffmanites - I think "Hold on" might be on there. Yes, I have "The Essential Santana" and that almost gets it right-frustratingly leaving off one of my fave Santana hits "One Chain (Don't Make No Prison)" as well as some other minor singles/radio hits like "Let It Shine", "Gypsy Woman" (their last Columbia hit in 1990-it made the AC Top 40) and "I'm The One Who Loves You". "Hold On" is there though which was great! But, as a huge fan of the "Shango" album I was appalled at the single edit of "Nowhere To Run", which is such a killer song, and certainly not long. Both that song and "Hold On" bring back great memories of the old MTV days in 1982 as both of these songs were played constantly, not to mention the obscure video for a great tune called "The Nile" which got some play as well (I have all the Santana MTV videos). "Hold On" was one of Santana's biggest hits reaching the Top 15, yet it is ingored by Carlos who seems to enjoy crap like "You & I" and "Maria Maria" more. I keep waiting for any news of the later Santana remasters, but I have a feeling it might even be Carlos keeping that from happening.
