These UK versus US topics have me scratching my head over what to do about some of my favorite bands.
So let's skip the decades and just list the five best bands that hail from neither the US nor UK/Eire. Mine would be:

ABBA
Crowded House
a-ha
Guess Who/Bachman-Turner Overdrive
INXS

If you hadn't of said "bands", I could have easily come up with 10 great Canadian Singer Songwriters! But since you did.....

Scorpions
Pied Pumkin
Blue Rodeo
Cowboy Junkies
Guess Who

My runners up are Focus, Goanna & Novalis

I want to also mention Steppenwolf because I didn't list them anywhere else. Two of the original members were Canadian, and John Kay became a Canadian citizen, so although they may not technically qualify I'm squeezing them into the post.

I'm in complete agreement, Geff. I'm not sure I could hold that list to 10. But the other threads specified bands, so thought I'd keep to the same track here.

And no "Gran Turismo," Glenn? That's my favorite from the Cardigans...

I liked the earlier stuff better because there was an interesting contrast between the mostly upbeat music and the mostly downbeat lyrics. Gran Turismo simply paired dark lyrics with dark music, and to me that's less interesting. As I said on another thread, my impression was that they were somehow embarassed by the success of "Love Fool" and went to the other extreme musically. Gran Turismo has pages of positive reviews on Amazon, but it just wasn't for me.
