If Jimi Hendrix was the experience, Chrissie Hynde is the Pretenders and she's from Ohio.

US: R.E.M. Van Halen Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers Talking Heads The Cars
UK: New Order U2 Eurythmics Pet Shop Boys The Clash
HYBRIDS: Police Pretenders
I really don't consider Bruce & the E-Streeters to be a "band" in this sense, otherwise they'd be #1 on the US list.

Jimbo's post reminded me-the Clash should be on my list.I'll remove The Smiths. I was considering removing Def Leppard, but they're just too much fun to listen to.

Talk about a blowout: it's UK all the way in this decade. (For Police and Pretenders, I'll follow home of the singers.)
UK: U2 (assume I can include Eire) Pet Shop Boys Squeeze Eurythmics Police (collectively, my next five - ABC, Def Leppard, Duran Duran, New Order and Human League - would still beat the top five US)
US: Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers Pretenders Heart Go-Go's Motels

I know the Clash made some of their best records into the 80s, but I still think of them as 70s, and did put them on that list. Removing the Smiths? This is a serious wrong, I don't know if I can stand it.

I hold Pet Shop Boys in high regard, but aren't they a vocal duo?

Pet Shop Boys: Neil Tennant (vocals), Chris Lowe (keyboards). Good enough for me.

How are U2 British? Anyway, the UK hby a landslide, in this, the best decade for music ever!
UK: Echo & Bunnymen The Cure Marillion Psychedelic Furs Iron Maiden (and sooooooooooo many more like Bauhaus, Simple Minds, Tears For Fears, Peter Gabriel, XTC, Ultravox, Motorhead, etc.)
US: The Pretenders X Metallica Van Halen Journey

The no solo artist thing has been tough on me for each decade. I changed my mind - US & UK are tied this decade.
UK Marillion Bow Wow Wow Roxy Music U2 Police
US Prince & The Revolution Dan Reed Network Berlin Grateful Dead Lone Justice

UK: Iron Maiden. Judas Priest. The Smiths. U2 and The Police are a tie in my book. Def Leppard.
U.S. Metallica Van Halen. Guns and Roses. R.E.M. Slayer and Megadeth are tied, as well, in my opinion.
