The early 60's is ripe with mawkish ditties such as the Everly Bros.' "Ebony Eyes". I love the Everly's but this one is just so sickeningly over the top....

I'm thinking of few Shangri-la's songs such as "Past Present and Future" - "But don't try to touch me, don't try to touch me
Cos that will never happen again..." Of course, some of their songs didn't jump the shark.

"Angel from Montgomery" (written by John Prine, popularized by Bonnie Raitt) about a lonely old woman who passes the time by mourning the loss of pretty much everyone she has ever loved. She is sitting around waiting to die.

Can't get much more depressing than this.
