I think that their constant evolution is the thing that marks them as a great band--like the Beatles, they aren't satisfied to stand still. Contrast that with other longstanding bands that don't really grow and with whom you lose interest.

The Who are a good example. They were in constant evolution until around 1980 or so and then kind of settled in. They weren't as interesting after that.
