Upon first hearing, I thought that Jon Astley's minor hit "Jane's Getting Serious" was a new single from the Cars.

Chicago? Really? It sounds like BST to me. It's mostly the vocalist sounding like David Clayton-Thomas.

And I'd also say that DCT-era BST based their entire sound around "Touch Me" by the Doors.

Bleu put out this awesome ELO tribute album... I guess that's what you'd call it. It's really more than that, it's as if he tried to produce a Jeff Lynne album without actually having Jeff's input. It also features performances by Hanson, Mike Viola, Jason Scheff of Chicago, and Andy Sturmer of Jellyfish.

If this came out in 2007, I inadvertently left it off my best-of-2007 list. I think I listened to "Ya Had Me Going" about 700 times in the month after I bought that album.

On "Uptown Girl" Billy Joel did a great job in recreating The Four Seasons sound
and on "Scandanavian Skies" he sounded like Lennon

Julian Lennon did a good job of mimicking Bowie on "Now You're in Heaven"

The female singer from Evanescence has always sounded like a hard rock version of Paula Cole to me.

See, it always sounded like Terry Keith to me. Of course, this would have been back when I only ever heard the song on AM radio.

Jamiroquai sounded a lot like Stevie Wonder.

Both of the following:

Icehouse - "No Promises"

Edwyn Collins - "A Girl Like You"

...could easily be passed off on unsuspecting people as David Bowie.

Talk Talk's "It's My Life" had me checking the Archives to see which Roxy Music album it was from. Similarly, David Sylvain of Japan seems to have spent many a lonely hour in his bedroom, listening to nothing but Roxy/Ferry albums. Check out the song "Methods of Dance," for instance.

If I didn't know the new wave hit "Back of My Hand" was by the Jags, I'd swear it was Elvis Costello.

Chris Rea's "The Road To Hell" is a spot-on Dire Straits cop.

I thought Joshua Kadison's "Beautiful in My Eyes" was latter-day Elton John.

I think it was "No Values" on Give My Regards to Broadstreet that McCartney said came to him in a dream where he watched the Rolling Stones perform the song live. He then woke to write it down as his version of a Stones song.

Duncan Browne's Fauvette sounds like it's straight off a Dire Straits album. I'm uncertain which came first; up until today I always though that Browne's recording was first; but Amazon claims Dire Straits 1st was a year earlier..:

This cd (Streets Of Fire) & DB's previous release Wild Places are 2 of my fav unknown albums. Thanks for reminding me of them with the DS mention above!

Geff R,
True story: Neil Young's late Dad thought it was Neil doing "Horse With No Name" the first time he heard it as well. He mentioned it to Neil and Neil had to explain that it wasn't him.

When Live - Selling The Drama came out i thought, hey, that sounds more like REM than they do these days. I'm glad to hear the new REM song sounds like old REM.

And reaching across the gender lines, Aimee Mann channels David Bowie during the verses of "Looking Over My Shoulder" from Til Tuesday's first album "Voices Carry"...

Zaine Griff did a good job of channeling Bowie in "Ashes and Diamonds" and "Passionate Reply".

When I first heard this song, "Beach Baby" as a kid, I thought it was the Beach Boys. But, it was the group, First Class.

Mercury does an excellent Daltrey on Queen's "I Want it All". The Allman Brothers do a spot on cover of Jefferson Airplane's "She Has Funny Cars".
