Layla
No Reason to Cry
461 Ocean Boulevard
There's one in Every Crowd
Backless

Layla is the out and out rocker, the other four lope along gently and have nice melodies. "I Shot the Sheriff" is the big hit.

"Layla and Other Love Songs" is credited to Derek and the Dominos, but is included in the Eric Clapton remasters series put out by Polydor, so I decided to count it as a solo album.

Can we include Cream and John Mayall albums? If not, I stop at 3:

Layla
461 Ocean Boulevard
Eric Clapton (the one with "Let It Rain" on it)

Okay, if you include the group projects, my list would be different. Haven't decided on that one yet, but there's no getting around Cream. As for Yardbirds, I prefer the Jeff Beck years.

I left out Blind Faith or any Cream releases, as I don't consider them *solo* releases.
Same for Layla by Derek & The Dominos... otherwise my list would certainly include Blind Faith and Layla).

Eric Clapton
461 Ocean Blvd.
Slowhand
24 Nights
Unplugged

24 Nights may be underrated, but it is essential IMO.
Great album, and Eric's guitar on this 2CD set is as about as *hot* as it comes.

I can't limit these to just five - the following are also essential Clapton SOLO releases:
Crossroads boxset
Journeyman
From The Cradle
Just One Night 2cd live set

These duet albums are also very good--
Riding With The King with BB King)
The Road to Escondido with J.J. Cale

It all starts with his first Eric Clapton, a must own.

I take it I'm not allowed to use the Crossroads box? That's the meat of my EC collection. Here's the top 5 of the other 8 I own. I noticed someone else mentioned Blind Faith which would be in my top 5, but I don't consider it a Clapton solo album. There are also several Cream albums I'd rate higher then any of these. I won the Cream box & The MFSL Goodbye Cream. The Mayall stuff is also pretty cool.

1. Layla
2. Just One Night
3. EC Was Here
4. Rush Soundtrack
5. 24 Nights

"Layla..." is one of my two or three favorite albums, but with great contributions from everyone involved I'm not going to use it here.

Solo albums:

"461 Ocean Blvd.
"There's One in Every Crowd"
"EC Was Here"
"Slowhand"
"Behind the Sun"

Not into EC anymore, but I used to be a fan. My picks:

461 Ocean Blvd.
Slowhand
Behind The Sun
Journeyman
From The Cradle (that tour blew me away)

Renny, "Pilgrim" is my favorite EC album. And his follow-up "Reptile" isn't very far behind.

Bannings: 3
1) Blues Breakers John Mayall with Eric Clapton aka The Beano album.

2) Fresh Cream.

3) Disraeli Gears.

4) Wheels of Fire.

5) Goodbye.

Not coincendentally, I own every one of those albums, in addition to a slew of live recordings.
