Back in the 80's one of my cover bands used to play Love Stinks. I was the vocalist for that song, & I changed the chorus to: "I've been through Peanuts, been through Tricky Dick. I've been through it all but...... REAGAN STINKS!". The audience used to love singing along!

I'd throw Foreigner's "Hot Blooded" in with the above two -- and there's another one in that group that is driving me nuts because I can't think of it. "Meadows" Joe Walsh

Tom Petty's "Mary Jane's Last Dance" and the Chili Pepper's "Dani California" have the same riff.

Jimbo wrote: Just a couple of years ago, there was all that rigmarole about Tom Petty suing the Red Hot Chili Peppers because he claimed that "Dani California" plagiarized "Mary Jane's Last Dance," but personally I don't think it's that close. Should have read the whole thread! Did anyone already mention Ray Parker Jr.'s "Ghostbusters" and Huey Lewis' "I Want a New Drug"? Huey sued and won, I believe. The interesting thing is, Ghostbusters approached Huey about a theme song. He turned them down. They then did "Ghostbusters". Hmmmmmm. Later, Huey changed his mind about soundtracks and did "Back to the Future".

DC Talk's "Jesus Freak" and The Offspring's "Self Esteem" have very similar riffs.
The Newsboys' "Shine" and Hot Chocolate's "You Sexy Thing" also have very similar riffs.
Pretty sure nobody's already said those!

BTW, I don't see any similarity at all between "Sunglasses" and "Sweet Dreams". It's not the melody of the vocals, it's the synth riffs behind them. Same for the keyboard parts on Jefferson Starship's "Jane" and Aldo Nova's "Fantasy." They sound like each other, not like Corey Hart.

Steve wrote: BTW, I don't see any similarity at all between "Sunglasses" and "Sweet Dreams". I don't see much of one, either. But then I don't see that big a similarity between "Hello, I Love You" and "All Day and All of the Night," and that's supposed to be one of the all-time classic cases. The examples I look for are the ones that jump out at you in a big way, like when my nephew played "Brain Stew" for me and I said, "That's freakin' Chicago!" (I had earlier ruined M.C. Hammer for him, and now Green Day.) Or when I first heard "Part Time Lover" and said, "Holy crap, that's "Maneater"! (Both these examples have already been mentioned.)

Let's not even get into bands where all their hit songs sound exactly alike. Like Nickelback.

In Jay Mohr's SNL book Gasping for Airtime, he talks about SNL musical director GE Smith taking him aside while Aerosmith was on and showing him that every hit Aerosmith song used the same chords.

Or Boston.
Or REO Speedwagon.
Or the early Cars.

The mention of The Cars reminded me that, back in the early '80s, I told a friend that I liked the group's latest single, "Touch and Go." He said, "Are you kidding? That's the theme from Bonanza!"
I have not been able to hear that song with a straight face since.

Gimme Some Slack uses that same galloping riff.

"Someone" by the Rembrandts is a pretty brazen ripoff of David Bowie's "Big Brother," albeit a sappier, less paranoid one.

The little vocal ad lib section at the end of U2's "Stay (Far Away/So Close)" is the intro from "Ma Cherie Amour,"
