Hank wrote: I am totally not following Twitchy on those comparisons. Don't hear the similarities, except that Feelin' and LTTCV are both kinda jangly. PW isn't even that. I'm telling you -- put on "Feeling" and you can totally sing "Last Train To Clarksville" to it. And Boyce and Hart admitted that LTTCV was a rewrite of "Paperback Writer".

I had no idea there were so many songs out there like that. I thought the two I mentioned would be the only ones. Anyway, it really is driving me crazy that I can't think of the title that Eagles song is copying, so if anyone has any idea what the song is please let me know. Unless of course I'm the only one that hears it, then I guess I'm outta luck lol.

When I was younger I was told that Harvard offered a cash prize for anyone who could produce four bars of totally original tonal music. It went uncollected. As BNL might say, it's all been done.

Oh, just thought of another one -- well, they have the same chord progression, so you could easily do a medley -- "Different Drum" by Mike Nesmith (covered by the Stone Poneys) and "Cruel to be Kind" by Nick Lowe. You can kind of cram Paul McCartney's "Young Boy" in there, but it's a sloppy fit.
Similarly, you can do a similar medley with "Everyday" by Buddy Holly and "Sunday Girl" by Blondie.
And of course, "Don't Bring Be Down" by ELO and "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (reprise)" by some band of lovable mop tops.

See, you're talking countermelodies that can be sung in counterpoint to each other over similar chord progressions. That's not the same thing as having a similar melody.for the vocals (or lead instrument).

Listen to the guitar work on "Feelin" and tell me it's not "Last Train To Clarksville."

Sure, there are such things as countermelodies, and chord progressions, and I surely have no idea what they are, but I feel compelled to once again jump in and give my opinion on things I know nothing about. But it's a <strong opinion> nonetheless, and the right opinion as you well know. Well you would know, if you had an opinion of your own that wasn't borrowed from someone else, like a library book that you owe money on because you never returned it when you were in college you naughty widdle boy. . . . . . . . . . . . . . Wow. Sorry. Seems I was possessed by the ghost of Steve for a minute. Hope I didn't say anything rude.

See, I didn't pick up on that at first because you didn't use the "BS Flag" emoticon.
Nor did you use the phrase "I'm just trying to debate, but nobody debates me because they can't come up with a good counterargument."

The Stones gave k.d. lang a songwriting credit on "Anybody Seen My Baby" after it was pointed out that the chorus was nearly identical to "Constant Craving."

Pip wrote: My sweet Lord, how do you people come up with these? Speaking of "My Sweet Lord"... How about that song and "He's So Fine"? As Pip pointed out in another post (about Harvard's offering a cash prize for anyone who could produce four bars of totally original tonal music)... when you think about it, all Western music is comprised of a combination of only 12 different notes. The number of possible combinations has to be a finite one. The odds of anyone coming up with a completely original melody must be extremely improbable by now.

Of course, some claim that The Doors' "Hello I Love You" was a rip-off of "All Day and All of the Night" by The Kinks. This is especially noticeable in The Cure's version of Hello, where Robert Smith plays up the similarities for all they are worth. I seem to recall reading once that Ray Davies successfully (?) sued The Doors, and won all of The Doors' UK royalties for the song, but whether that is truth or legend is unknown to me.
I always get a laugh listening to Don Dixon's "Chi-Town Budget Show" album where, after performing his original composition "Heart in a Box", Don and Marti Jones play around and sing a verse of it to the tune of John Denver's "Annie's Song". There is no stealing of melody between the two songs, the lyrics just share the same meter (I think that's the proper poetic terminology, high-school English class was wayyyy too long ago). But it is still fun to hear

I wasn't going to post this because I thought it was two obscure, but since No Phones noted two songs that share the same meter (but not the same melody) here's another example of that.
The chorus of Saint Etienne's "Action" has a very similar meter and phrasing to The Beach Boys song "Do It Again." Musically the songs are worlds apart, but these guys are major Beach Boys fans so I don't think this is a coincidence. Note how many words and pauses hit on the same beat...
ST. ETIENNE Cause I've been searching for all the people I used to turn to and All the people who knew the answers Let's get the feeling again
BEACH BOYS Well I've been thinking bout All the places we've surfed and danced and All the faces weve missed so lets get Back together and do it again

In junior high, I wrote a poem that was shamelessly based upon the lyrical themes and meter of "Shades Of Grey" by the Monkees. I wrote it for a contest by the school district. I won for my school's 8th grade class and they published it. I look back and laugh at what trite crap it was.
But I think 99% of all poetry written by those under 30 is trite crap.

TS Garp wrote: Vanilla Ice "Ice,Ice Baby", and Bowies "Under Pressure" From the beginning of the thread: Quote: Can anyone else on here think of other instances where the melody of one song reminds you of the melody of another one? And I don't mean rap artists sampling other artists music and putting it into their own. I mean genuine melodies that seem ripped off from other artists work.

I just thought of another one: The opening guitar hook from Black Sabbath's "Paranoid" sounds suspiciously "inspired by" Jimmy Page's guitar solo on the studio version of "Dazed And Confused" by Led Zeppelin...Am I the only person ever to make that connection?
