Sonic Youth's "Goo" was a pretty fantastic sellout (and the equally sellout follow-up, "Dirty," wasn't bad, either).

Also, Pavement's "Terror Twilight."

I love With Sympathy...it is also the unique *Sell Out*, considering it being the first album, but it afforded the money to pursue the bands 'true leanings' or "Sell Ins" I suppose.

Another Sell Out I'm fond of:
Let's Dance - David Bowie

Achtung Baby.

At the time, I had a pretty big dislike for U2. I liked Pride (In The Name Of Love) but found most of their stuff to be pretentious and self-important.

I remember an ad in Rolling Stone for Achtung Baby when it came out that said "100% Anthem Free" and that summed up my feelings about that album. It was garish and wacky and a whole lot of fun.

Frequently bands get accused of selling out when they're pretty much doing the same thing or the next thing in their natural evolution but this time the public is ready for it and the label is behind them. Their old fans just resent them not being their private little find anymore.

Old U2 fans usually cite Jericho Tree as the sell out with all its hit singles and Bono's self-important preaching. Achtung Baby was largely seen a return to a more stripped down sound.

I love REM's "Monster" - isn't that considered a sellout?

Yes - 90125

Ultimately I still like their earlier stuff more, but nonetheless I have a lot of fond memories of this album.

The last two Ride albums — Carnival Of Light and Tarantula — are in my top 20, sometimes top 10 of all time. I wouldn't call them sellout albums but the band's original fans always seem to.

Jonathan Richman--Jonathan Sings!. He toned down the weirdness just a bit, Sire Records souped up the production, and it made no difference in sales. But it turned out one great album.

That's the ONLY Metallica album I can listen to. The 2 ballads are great songs.

I despised this version of Yes, until I bought the first box set. One of the discs was just the Trevor Rabin version of the band, & the entire cd was great pop music. Totally changed my opinion.

I don't know if I buy that.. most long-term U2 fans I knew at the time were pretty freaked out when they heard "The Fly". The album was definitely a reinvention rather than a return to form.

I've also always heard "Achtung.." referred to as a "reinvention", not a return to any form.

So--Peter Gabriel. After years of hiding behind masks and make-up, Peter decided to come on like a regular guy, with a sense of humor, no less!
