I'll see yours and raise you Doobie Brothers' Livin On The Fault Line.

Pretty much anything that begins with Fender Rhodes or Clavinet gets my vote.

In a different style, I pick Black Crowes' Southern Harmony and Musical Companion. Sent me straight to the Faces.

When I was 14 and heard the first measures of "Thunder Road" for the first time I knew Born to Run was great. I still think it's one of the greatest rock records ever.

For all of the complaining I do about 21st century Springsteen, the man certainly knew how to kick off an album. I still remember sitting on my bedroom floor with the "Darkness On The Edge of Town" record jacket, inner sleeve and lyric sheet spread out on the carpet in front of me, chained by my headphones to my turntable, hearing Max Weinberg kicking off "Badlands" and just thinking...wow! At that time, the only other Springsteen album I'd ever heard was "Born In The U.S.A." and what I didn't understand was...how come I've never heard any of this stuff on the radio?

In 1978 the pop music was disco, the trendy music was punk, and the serious music was progressive. Springsteen had his audience but didn't really crack the radio scene for a couple more years.

Kind of Blue - Miles Davis
White Album - Beatles
Let It Bleed - Rolling Stones
Joe Cocker! - Joe Cocker
Greatest Hits - Sly & The Family Stone
Plastic Ono Band - John Lennon
Who's Next - The Who
The Pretender - Jackson Browne
Rough Mix - Pete Townshend & Ronnie Lane
Excitable Boy - Warren Zevon
Armed Forces - Elvis Costello
Wavelength - Van Morrison
Remain In Light - Talking Heads
Crazy Rhythms - Feelies
I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight - Richard & Linda Thompson
Shoot Out The Lights - Richard & Linda Thompson
Car Wheels On A Gravel Road - Lucinda Williams
Mule Variations - Tom Waits
Bachelor No. 2 - Aimee Mann

I did not include albums where I had already heard the first song on the radio or TV before listening to the entire album. I also limited my list to albums where I had only heard about 3 or less songs when I got them. I included Sly's Greatest Hits because it was my first Sly album, and I still remember hearing "I Want To Take You Higher" for the first time.

I should throw Pete Townshend's White City on this list as well. A breathtaking opening with Give Blood, and not really a bum track on the whole thing.

This one is tough for me, because I can rarely remember what I was doing the forst time I heard a given record. Here's a few though:

Joan Baez Diamonds & Rust (heard it in a record store)
Sarah McLachlan's 1st 3 (I heard the 1st one in a Canadian record store before it was out in the US and had to find out what it was)
Shari Ulrich's first solo *same story as above)
Wishbone Ash's 1st
