Anyone said this yet? - Quadrophenia! Be nice to see what sort of extra materials they come up with if it's ever done.
I was recently re-reading articles vintage issues of ICE circa 1995 or so which dealt with then then-upcoming "Quadrophenia" remaster. Jon Astley indicated that he was considering squeezing "Quadrophenia" onto a single disc and then including a second disc of rarities and outtakes--he mentioned that there were several of them. In a subsequent "CD Watchdog" interview following the upgraded 1996 release, he then discussed why he and Townshend had ultimately backtracked on this. Here's what had me scratching my head over ten years later, however: Other than the three presumed outtakes that wound up on the Quadrophenia film soundtrack ("Four Faces", "Joker James" and "Get Out And Stay Out"), the only other outtake to surface from this era has been "We Close Tonight" on the 1998 "Odds & Sods" remaster. The implication is, then, that there are other unreleased Quadrophenia-era Who tracks that have managed to elude even the bootleggers.
The Who reissue project appears to have been aborted roughly four years ago (much to Renny's relief, I'm sure) with the "1st Singles Box" set. It's a shame that ICE is no longer around to pester Jon Astley as to why, but throughout the 90's, the persistant rumor was that all of the Who's reunion/reissue activities were motivated primarily to raise cash for a perennially broke John Entwistle--witness the pointless inclusion of Ox-penned live tracks on the 1997 "It's Hard" and "Face Dances" remasters. It's a shame--I know I'd welcome deluxe editions for both "Quadrophenia" and "The Who Sell Out" similar to the other 2-disc Who sets released between 2001 and 2003.
