Looking through the CD collection today, and it struck me as odd that these CD's have yet to be remastered, or re-remastered like other CD's in the artist's catalog. I realize some of these may have come out as special editions at one time thru the record label, or they may have been Mobile Fidelity releases:

Phil Collins - Face Value, No Jacket Required

Crosby, Stills and Nash - Allies

Crosby, Stills Nash & Young - Deja Vu or 4 Way Street

Doobie Brothers - whole 70's catalog

Fleetwood Mac - Mirage and Tango In The Night

Guns n' Roses - Appetite For Destruction

Heart - Dreamboat Annie

Don Henley - I Can't Stand Still or Building The Perfect Beast

Queen - I know the catalog was redone in the early 90's, but there is a night and day sound quality difference between the first remaster of A Night At The Opera and the second one to honor the anniversary of its release. I wonder what they could with the other classic records like A Day At The Races, etc.

Paul Simon - Live Rhymin'

Bruce Springsteen - 70's and 80's catalog besides Born To Run box set

Sting - 80's catalog

James Taylor - his early works

U2 - 80's catalog besides Joshua Tree box set

Joe Walsh - most of his catalog

The Who - Magic Bus, Who's Last, Hooligans and other compilations.

Steve Winwood - 80's catalog

Neil Young - good chunks of the 60's, 70's, 80's catalog

ZZ Top - good chunks of the 70's, 80's catalog

There is a mid 90's remaster of Deja Vu from the first go round of the Wea remasters; & 4 way street was first released on cd as an expanded remaster; I THINK also in the mid 90's..

I don't know if it's still in print, but at one time this decade there was a USA Capitol Mini LP sleeve remaster of Dreamboat Annie.

Remastering is not always for the better, but Neil Young's early Reprise catalog needs it. Deja Vu and 4 Way Street have been remastered.

I'd like to add these to the list of CD's that need to be remastered;
Prince (WB catalog from 1978 thru 1995)
Van Morrison - ("Astral Weeks" & "Moondance")
Weather Report - (post "Heavy Weather" CDs thru 1986)
Santana - ("Borboletta", "Amigos", "Festival")
Isley Bros. - (post "Harvest for the World" CDs thru 1983)
Earth, Wind & Fire - ("Faces", "Raise" & "Powerlight")

there is a (very very expensive if you can even find it) HDCD japanese version of "deja vu" that just sounds great.

"4 way street" remaster added 4 bonus tracks (one from each member).

I never upgraded "4 Way Street" - my original Japanese pressing in the fatboy case sounds just fine.

I'll second Eddie Scott on the EW&F post I Am albums...Mark Wilder and Leo Sacks did a fantastic job on all of the previous remasters. And all of the bonus tracks have been stellar.

But, Gunner, I don't think Phil Collins' Face Value sounds bad at all as is. GNR either.

"Billion Dollar Babies" saw an upgrade earlier this decade, but "Love It To Death", "School's Out" and all the other original Alice Cooper albums have been neglected.

I think "Who's Last" saw a quasi-upgrade via the "Live In Toronto" set from 2006. I would imagine that everything on the "Hooligans" set can be found remastered elsewhere as well. But there are scattered other Moon-era Who b-sides that still have not been remixed in the post-1994 boxed set era--"Here For More", "Waspman", etc.

Similarly, Janis Joplin's catalog has seen a CD-era revamping which neglects certain tracks from the LP era--the "Janis" soundtrack album, the first disc of the double "Joplin In Concert" set, and much of the "Farewell Song" compilation.

The lack of any remastered non-BTR Springsteen titles from the 70's and 80's continues to mystify me, especially "The River" and "Darkness On The Edge Of Town".

Much of Bob Dylan's catalog was remastered about three-and-a-half years ago, but there are a few albums that were passed over in the campaign--the Christian-era albums "Saved" and "Shot of Love", the alcoholic-era "Empire Burlesque", "Knocked Out Loaded" and "Down In The Groove", and the early 70's "Self-Portrait", "New Morning" and "Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid". There is also the "Dylan" album, of course, which is essentially a "Self-Portrait" bonus disc of outtakes. I don't know if any of the Dylan odds and ends were remastered for I-tunes at all.

In regards to Springsteen, I heard there might be a "Darkness..." anniversary treatment ala "Born to Run" coming out this year for it's 30th. This might be the way he's doing it for his more popular items from his catalog. I heard there might be a "Tracks 2" also...just don't know when.

My CD of Bruce Springsteen's The River sounds considerably worse than Born to Run, The Wild ..., etc. Supposedly they were all remastered at one point by Bob Ludwig, so I can't understand why.

I think the only upgrade that "The River" or "Darkness", etc. have ever gotten is that the printing on the spine of the jewel box has been changed from the old Columbia "Red Letter" type to something less antiquated. Knowing Jon Landau, 2008 is a lot more likely to produce an expanded 10th anniversary version of the "Tracks" box set (with two previously unreleased songs) than a 30th anniversary "Darkness" reissue.

In all seriousness, in many ways Springsteen's studio albums have never really gotten their due. When I first got into Springsteen back in the 80's, "Darkness" and "The River" and "The Wild, The Innocent..." were dismissed as being inferior to the live shows, and as studio outtakes (especially from "Born In The U.S.A.") began to see wide bootleg circulation in the 90's, hardcore fans tended to snub the official material as well. I have to wonder if this hasn't contributed to Springsteen's apparent disinterest in his vintage studio output. For me however, these original albums were crucial listening for me back when I was in my teens--not the bootlegs--and it would be nice for the rest of these albums to finally get the repsect previously only accorded to "Born To Run".

I used to own a Japanese vinyl pressing of The River. Even it sounded mediocre. I wonder if the original master tapes may have been poorly recorded.

I'd like to see remastered an expanded editions of Robin Trower's For Earth Below, Twice Removed From Yesterday and a definitive release of the live album from back in the day.
I'm a little stretched for time at the moment, so I'll reserve commentary on the Springsteen catalog until later.

Weren't these remastered in the late '90s by Sony/Columbia? Maybe I'm wrong...

I did see, however, a BST 3/BST 4 two-albums-on-one-CD import listed in the latest issue of the Collector's Choice catalog. It's on the Demon label. Don't know how it sounds, though...

BGO UK did Twice in 1997 as a "2fer" with Bridge Of Sighs. I would like to see an expanded Twice with some live tracks like they did for Bridge in the US.

FWIW the Japan Mini LP sleeves of Springsteens early albums appear to be different masters when compared to my original Japan for USA discs. Darkness sounds much nicer on the mini LP. Born to Run appears to have been remastered more than one ( Mastersound Gold, Anniversary issue and the mini LP versions).

My request for remastering would be the Kinks early discs.
