Setting aside whether it's total lunacy to spend $200 to get a box set of CDs one already has (ahem) just to get mini LP fascimile artwork, two coasters and a poster, does anyone have any idea which Floyd remasters were used for this box set? My copy of Oh By The Way is an EU import and uses EMI discs, but there's no info on which remasters were used. My understanding is that all Floyd EMI CDs use remasters from the Shine On box set of 15 years ago, except for the 2003 remaster of Dark Side for SACD, the 2004 remaster of The Final Cut with the extra track and the 2007 remaster of Piper. That being said, Columbia in the U.S. released a set of Floyd remasters (including Wish You Were Here, Animals, and The Wall) in 1997, which I have, and I read that the most recent Columbia issue of Momentary Lapse, which I have, was remastered in 2005 because the label lost the 1997 remasters. Anyone know whether the Columbia remasters use a different/better source than the Oh By The Way/EMI versions?

To my ears, my Columbia version of Animals sounds significantly better than the Oh By The Way version, but the Oh By The Way version of Momentary Lapse sounds better than my Columbia version. The others (Wish You Were Here and The Wall) sound about the same on both formats. I was going to sell all my jewel box Floyd CDs, but now I'm not so sure, at least in the case of Animals. Insight/knowledge? All of this is a bit trainspotting, but hence this forum.

Really?
I never heard about this.

But I bought my '97 Columbia version of AMLOR long before 2005.
I would reckon most Pink Floyd fans probably had already bought it way before 2005.

BTW... my '97 Columbia sounds great!
And I have no plans to buy the overpriced Oh By The Way box.

I'm happy with a combo of the Shine On box and the '97 Columbia remasters, personally.

I haven't received my box yet, but I've read that "When The Tigers Broke Free" is once again NOT on "The Final Cut" so you may want to make sure you have that track either on the prior "Final Cut" CD, the "Echoes" collection or somewhere else.

"Lost" the remasters? I haven't heard this before. The 1997 remaster is the latest one AFAIK.

The 1994? 1997? Columbia remaster of Animals (the one with the black and white CD label) is the best CD remaster to my ears. It's odd they reverted back to the 1992? remaster for the Capitol edition that's been out for years now AND the one found in this box set.

What drives me nuts about Oh By The Way is the lack of quality control. The lyric sheet for Side 3 of The Wall is printed twice, and the CD labels for Ummagumma are switched. The Pink Floyd UK website is offering exchanges for the Wall lyric sheet.

"Tigers" is on the Oh By The Way disc of The Final Cut—at least in mine, anyway.

There are different masters. The same thing happened with Is There Anybody Out There? The Wall Live --it was a 2005 remaster of the original 2000 issue. You can tell the difference by the copyright/mastering credits in A Momentary Lapse and Anybody Out There...the remastered versions say "copyright Sony BMG Music Entertainment" and "mastered by James Guthrie and Joel Plante at das boot recording" while the earlier versions say "copyright Sony Music Entertainment" and "mastered by Doug Sax at The Mastering Lab." In 2004, Sony and BMG merged, hence the updated copyrights.

As for Animals, the most recent remaster available in Europe is the 1992 remaster used in the box set version, AFAIK. The 1997 Columbia remasters (issued in December 1997) were issued in North America only (I think), because Columbia at that time had the North American rights to Pink Floyd's 1975-1995 recordings, while EMI has always had the rights to all Pink Floyd recordings in the rest of the world. Maybe EMI (which issued this box set) doesn't have access to the 1997 remasters because they were done for Columbia.

Yeah, I've e-mailed a request for a new wall lyric sheet. Seems like for $200 retail, it also wouldn't have eaten into profits too much to do new remasters of the albums that were last remastered when the Soviet Union still existed. :sigh:

Technically, twice if you count the old MFSL gold disc from the nineties, which sounds great.

Yep, "Tigers" IS on it  . I had read some mis-information on another site.

I just received my correct inner sleeve for disc 2 of The Wall which I requested through http://www.pinkfloyd.co.uk. It arrived in an envelope with a handwritten mailing address but no return address; there's a US postmark. Very mysterious.

Now I just received two corrected discs for Ummagumma! Wow.
