Amy Winehouse Draws 6 Grammy Nominations

By JEFF LEEDS
Published: December 7, 2007

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 6 — Amy Winehouse, the British soul singer whose battles with addiction have turned her into a tabloid regular, drew six Grammy nominations, including nods for the four marquee categories, today as the contenders for the 50th annual awards ceremony were announced.

Ms. Winehouse, who scored a hit with her modern twist on soul music but who has repeatedly canceled performances in recent months as she clashed with personal demons, received nominations for album of the year, for “Back to Black” (Universal Republic), as well as for record and song of the year for the self-referential hit single, “Rehab,” about her refusal to enter treatment.

The 24-year-old singer, whose well-publicized troubles prompted doubts about how Grammy voters would view her, will also be in contention for the trophy for best new artist when the awards are handed out Feb. 10 at the Staples Center arena in Los Angeles in a broadcast on CBS.

Although Ms. Winehouse was the only performer to appear in all four of the most prestigious categories, she fell short of drawing the most nominations over all. That distinction went to the rap star Kanye West, who led the field with eight nominations, including his nomination for album of the year for the third CD in his college-themed trilogy, “Graduation.” Mr. West’s nominations also included those for best rap album and best rap song as a co-writer of the “Good Life.”

The biggest surprise of the day may have been the relatively low profile of Bruce Springsteen, whose new album, “Magic,” with the E Street Band, had been hailed by critics as a return to his classic rock style. Mr. Springsteen did draw four nominations, but none in the marquee categories. “Magic” had been seen as a favorite for the album of the year category, which Mr. Springsteen has never won.

nstead, the album of the year field included surprise entries from recordings far removed from the pop mainstream, including the country singer Vince Gill’s “These Days,” and the jazz composer Herbie Hancock’s “River: the Joni Letters.” In addition to Ms. Winehouse and Mr. West, the competition will include the new album “’Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace” from a previous Grammy favorite, the Foo Fighters.

Likewise, the list of best new artist contenders — four female solo performers and a female-fronted band — yielded some unexpected names, including the R&B singer Ledisi and the pop-punk act Paramore. (Not all the contenders were exactly new: Paramore garnered fame this year with its second major album, as did Feist, the Canadian singer-songwriter who has previously performed with the indie-rock band Broken Social Scene). The teenage country star Taylor Swift rounded out the field.

The nominations came as the event’s organizers, the National Academy of Recordings Arts and Sciences, are aiming to add weight to the ceremony, which over the years has come under fire for hewing too closely to the music industry’s commercial priorities. Grammy organizers already have undertaken an effort to create a historic feel for the event, including the broadcast of a two-hour special on CBS last week, “My Night at the Grammy’s,” spotlighting past performances, and the creation of a seven-CD series collecting Grammy-winning songs from the major genre fields.

Although the academy did not disclose who might be performing on the broadcast, critics expect it to use the 50th anniversary as a rationale to enlist any number of high-wattage past Grammy stars. Such celebrity drawing power might be pivotal if the academy hopes to sustain its recent ratings rebound — and offset the risk of this year’s field of leading nominees, some of whom who may be obscure to mainstream viewers.

After a weak showing two years ago, according to Nielsen Media Research, the Grammy broadcast jumped roughly 18 percent in last year’s ratings, drawing an estimated 20 million people.

How does Sugarland not even get nominated for "Best Country Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals"--but the fucking Eagles do?

The Grammys have been a joke ever since "Up Up And Away" won both "Record Of The Year" and "Song Of The Year" back in 1968.

I know they've been trying to be more "inclusive" when choosing Best Album nominees, but does Vince Gill or Herbie Hancock really have a chance?

The specialization of categories goes beyond parody. 5 different categories for Best Gospel album: rock/rap, pop/contemporary, southern/country/bluegrass, traditional, contemporary R&B.

P.S. to JohnG: Porcupine Tree is nominated for Best Surround-Sound Album! :yay:

I'm glad to see Tool's song The Pot getting a nomination for best hard rock song and the score to Pan's Labyrinth getting one for best film score as well, but the real travesty that I can see is Over the Rhine and Derek Webb not getting a single nomination for anything. In my opinion The Trumpet Child and The Ringing Bell both should be up for at least album of the year and any one of their songs but especially the title track from Over the Rhine's one should be up for some kind of song related Grammy too. Also the best country song I've heard all year Big & Rich's Eternity isn't up for anything as well. Looks like the Grammy's have struck out once again this year for the most part so guess I'll be watching something else that night on tv lol.

Actually, as much as the Grammys blow, there's a ton of great artists nominated. Most of them won't win and the show will suck and I won't watch, as I never do, but Seal, White Stripes, Bjork, Ozzy, Joe Satriani, Rush (!!!), Steve Vai, Tool, John Fogerty, Beck, King Diamond (!!!???) Wilco, Chemical Brothers, U2, Slayer, Bruce, McCartney, etc. are all great to see on the list.
I like Bruce, U2 and Macca, but they could record a recitiation of the menu at Bob's Big Boy and get nominated. Hell, Bruce has an undeserving nomination in the Instrumental field and he'll probably win it for no reason other than he's Bruce. U2 didn't even make an album and still got multiple nominations-it's ridiculous. I'd love to know how they even arrive at these nominations-it's baffling.
Yet, King Diamond got nominated! The King rules, and his new album is one of the best he's ever done-it is truly shocking and awesome to see him nominated. He won't win, but it's still cool-and hopefully Rush will finally win too!

I think I'm starting to realize the Grammy voters and I just listen to different types of music is all since probably a good 95% or so of what was nominated (Bruce, Paul, Amy, Rush, the Foo Fighters and the rest) I've either never heard of and don't really care to either, or have only heard a little bit from and didn't really think it was that big a deal. It was interesting to see all the different people up for nominations. Just the vast majority of them were for people I don't listen to. Personally I think if a band like Over the Rhine would have gotten some recognition that the show would end up being a heck of a lot more interesting but maybe they're just too obscure for the average person to have heard of them. I admittedly hadn't heard their music either until this year but in my mind it's definitely album of the year material. Guess the Grammy people just don't agree with me, huh?

I couldn't care less about the Grammys. I don't have any idea what they're about. Some go to very popular but lightweight artists, some go to older artists who have done much better music in their careers, and some picks are just bizarre. The catagories don't make any sense when you see who's nominated. In many cases, it's like apples and oranges. A lot of really great, really popular music has been ignored over the years.

Milli Vanilli got a Grammy. Do I need to say more?

They just don't mean anything to me.

Pete Wentz responds to Grammy Award diss in blog

07.Dec.07 9:21pm

Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz has angrily responded to being overlooked for a single 2008 Grammy Award on the band's blog.

The singer, who on Thursday (December 6) fulfilled an obligation to play People Magazine's Grammy nominations party, commented on the band's lack of nods in a blog post entitled "got bitterness? vs. a revelation on true connection (and the award goes to)."

Wentz' post said:

"the first reaction is jealousy mixed with a slight sense of entitlement. we just want to be a part of your club. other than the fact that we play the events for you and the right parties all the time (which is a bit embarrassing either for you or us, not sure which, possibly both. its kind of like being invited to a birthday party and then not allowed to eat the cake.)- it shouldnt mean much."

He then thanks his fans saying:

"we want our songs to be immortal and a statue doesnt do anything to help them live forever. a fifty year old white man shouldnt decide whether we are relevant or not- and he doesn't. we wanted to thank you for making us feel relevant- for sitting up all night to get into our shows and for buying our music. it means more in the wake of moments like this. we know who we are based on those who would walk through hell with us."

What, no Best Emo Band Of The Year catagory? I'm surprised the Grammys haven't stooped that low yet.

Yeah, it's gotta hurt when your chosen music genre hasn't risen to the level of industry acceptance that "Rap Gospel" has.

Pete Wentz? You mean there are actually people who give a damn what Pete Wentz says?
"...we know who we are based on those who would walk through hell with us"?

That sounds just a wee bit pretentious to me.

If he doesn't care about the statue, then what the hell is he going on about? :o

Grammys 2008 ceremony in jeopardy

Jan 15, 2008

The prospect of a glamorous Grammy Awards show is looking increasingly unlikely due to the ongoing writer’s strike in the US.

The Writer’s Guild of America has suggested that should a waiver be requested for the February 10 telecast, it will not be granted.

The Golden Globes winners were announced at a low-key press conference on Sunday night after the WGA denied a waiver, and actor’s refused to cross the picket line. It is also thought that a waiver will not be granted for the upcoming Academy Awards.

So far Grammy organisers have not asked for a waiver or agreement.

Although the strike affects the movie and television business, the Grammy Awards usually sees between 10 and 20 actors appear on the show as presenters. Should actors be included in this year’s plan, they are unlikely to cross a picket line.

Writers would also likely be required to write the show’s script.
