Former GENESIS drummer PHIL COLLINS has slammed SIR PAUL McCARTNEY - insisting he would never work with the star again.
The star has collaborated with the former Beatle in the past, but is adamant McCartney's current 'musical direction' does not match his own high standards.
He says, "I used to work with Paul, these days I wouldn't.
"I think he has the wrong sort of people around him. They let him make all the wrong musical choices."

I don't read that as he's slamming him. It sounds like he's just stating a fact, in a way he's right. He should get away from David Kahne. "Driving Rain, and "Memory Almost Full" are both awful. "Chaos and Creation" was a step in the right direction, but had a few weak songs on it. He hasn't made a really good album since "Flaming Pie", and that was 10 years ago.
Another thing is, I don't care for his touring current band at all. They seem to overplay everything. Especially drummer Abe Laborial Jr., he's just too hamfisted on even the slower numbers.

I've mentioned before, my opinion is he's been making bad musical choices non stop since McCartney 2!

I am so over the McCartney bashing that has been going on practically since the Beatles broke up. I thought Phil Collins had more class than that.

I won't try and defend McCartney's musical direction (or more accurately, lack thereof) for the past, oh 30 years or so (with a few welcomed exceptions), but it's really laughable to hear this criticism coming from Collins. Let's consider the latter Genesis albums (excepting up through "Trick Of the Tail"), compared to vintage Gabriel era Genesis. NOT to mention that pathetic pandering solo career he had post-Genesis. Thanks, Phil, for ruining "Groovy Kind Of Love" for me (and any other covers you did of classic hits), forever. Tell us, Phil, what was THAT "direction" all about, aside from pure greed and waning talent? Daffy, please: "What a MAROOOONNN!"

Other then the fact I like 3 solo songs from Collins (In The Air Tonight, Hero & Against All Odds) I couldn't have said it better!

As a music illiterate, I will say I like McCartney personally and his Beatles and some of his solo work.
So, assuming he has been off the track, some of you claiming for decades, in what way? Where did he go wrong? Can he ever fix it? Is it possible he just ran out of good ideas rather than make poor choices? or do you not really lose that kind of talent and it's more on the choices he's made and the people he's surrounded himself with. Is it possible to be as successful as he is/was and keep the "eye of the tiger?"

Didn't you think Phil did a good job playing the Supremes as if they were suits in the "You Can't Hurry Love" video? He could have at least done it in drag. Well, maybe that would not have been so hot.

I grew up on the Phil Collins Genesis and his solo career, but in recent years, I've been getting the Gabriel-era Genesis and even picked up the first CD from Phil's side project Brand X.
He should talk! Phil went from being this great prog/jazz fusion drummer to this adult contemporary wussy!! I was completely blown away by his drumwork on the Brand X CD - I knew he was good, but I didn't realize he was that good!
I think Bart Simpson summed it up when he broke his arm and his amazing drum chops were suddenly gone. This is not an exact quote, but he said something like "I was gonna be a great drummer. Now I'm gonna end up like Phil Collins!"

The problem I have with McCartney solo is all the songs sound to me like he's writing for a preteen audience, & that they've been marketed non-stop to the boomer generation as though we were idiots. As I was already 13 years old when PM's 1st solo cd came out, I've found his solo songwriting since "McCartney 2" really Irritating, with a capitol "I". It just rubs me strongly the wrong way. I even remember at 13 being surprised just how sloppy "McCartney" was other then Maybe I'm Amazed; although "McCartney" is a very unique album compared to anything else post Beatles PM has done.
As John Lennon put it in How Do You Sleep , "The sound you make is Muzak to my ears".
I believe that in the Beatles Lennon's bitterness & McCartney's syrup balanced each other out extremely well. While I like several Lennon solo albums (especially POB & Imagine), neither was as good without the other post Beatles.
