Michael McDonald is BY FAR AND AWAY my favorite period of the Doobie Brothers. I was an idiot to pass on seeing him live a few years ago.

I really enjoy all of the Doobie albums up through Stampede. Michael McDonald, while a great musician in his way, really did change the direction of the Doobie Brothers, and, IMHO, not for the better.

It took me a long time to warm up to Takin' It To The Streets. I still don't like a several songs on it. Living On The Fault Line is one of my favorite albums. Minute By Minute, their most commerically sucessful album is one I just do not like and never have.

Groups with albums right before (or after the breakup)

What about Traffic-Last Exit (half studio & half live)
Cream-Goodbye (same as Traffic)
CCR-Mardi Gras- You could tell this group was over by listening to this album

Duran Duran (Cuccurullo-era) - Medazzaland was awful, but Pop Trash was a pretty good last gasp before the Three Unrelated Taylors rejoined.

Surprisingly (to myself), I'd say this goes for INXS even before Hutchence's death. Elegantly Wasted, indeed. They should have quit with Welcome To Wherever You Are.

Elvis Costello since Brutal Youth. Maybe since Imperial Bedroom.
